Spotted in the field: a praying mantis ootheca 🌾

This is an egg case produced by a female mantis shortly after mating. The secretion hardens into a protective casing, sheltering dozens to hundreds of eggs through the winter ☃️🪺

The nymphs inside develop slowly and will hatch in the spring 🌿🌼
