A good example of this is the first foundation novel (I havent read the sequels) literally not having a single named female character, almost no close relationships between any characters at all, etc. Lots of high minded sociology stuff, very little in the way of style or presentation.

Generally I think hes just pretty bad at writing characters, leading to a bland style. The scifi stuff is alright, but has been so absorbed into the mainstream and copied hundreds of times it feels unoriginal now even if it wasnt at the time.

look I know its a right wing trope but sometimes the media elites really do want you to live in a pod and eat bugs

Tariffs have rapidly increased the price of coffee—a drink with almost no nutritional value and lots of functional substitutes. Yet coffee may also be the one thing Americans can’t live without, @elcush.bsky.social writes:
The Drink That Americans Won’t Give Up Without a Fight
Coffee has almost no nutritional value and lots of substitutes. It’s also, apparently, too important to lose.

Im #1 scifi snob and #1 Isaac Asimov hater

The biggest cultural shift portrayed in trek is that everyone reads books and plays videogames but NEVER watches tv or a movie, which is frankly just incoherent.
foremphasis.bsky.social
My biggest gripe with star trek is that there is a microwave in every wall that can make anything out of thin air and it has basically not changed society/culture at all. Like yes obviously capitalism no longer exists but we dont really see much downstream of that. Real lack of imagination.

listen I would love it if the best tiling window manager was also woke but alas

I think its a bit silly that you can block quote posts tbh. They built an "Im not owned!" button into the website...

Not joking when I say zardoz may be the best science fiction film ever made

When a programming language is opinionated: yaaay!
When it disagrees with one of your opions: Booo!

If your language cannot express async stuff well without additional syntax its probably just not very good
foremphasis.bsky.social
async keyword is a bad idea

What about an optimizing transpiler?

*type classes lol
foremphasis.bsky.social
Idk if "you dont need type glasses because you cant express anything new with them" is particularly convincing when all the monad types in gleam implement their own bind functions with different names.

I also think we should put a lot more effort into dissecting what llms are actually doing to process language. It may be the case that neural nets are actually an extremely inefficient implementation of that algorithm and we dont actually need all that compute.

If the ai industry can give up on creating agi and work on refining good use cases for what we already have I would be more interested I think. The ability to parse human language input is really incredible on its own but gets overshadowed by all the other ai nonsense.

I am impressed that llms can parse my not very clearly worded requests into a reasonable approximation of what I want. Its also neat to be able to modify a tools behaviour by describing what you want it to do. Llm as a user interface to tooling or a more general expert system is interesting
foremphasis.bsky.social
Not a totally fair evaluation bc I never use the supposedly more advanced paid models, but Ive not really been sufficiently impressed to try giving those aa shot yet.
foremphasis.bsky.social
Llms seem ok at answering questions about libraries/api and that saves me time on occasion but Ive (so far) not been impressed with the actual code they generate and always rewrite it.

Actually thats just forth
