A mad 50 something American runner lost in Ireland for the last 20 years

Ran my first ultra this year!!

Life is consumed by working horses with my kids, massive house remodel project and running.

First 50mi ultra ✅

Mistakes were made and lessons learned

Ran extra 6.8 miles as the lads I was chatting with went wrong at mile 35

Only just made the cutoff because of it

Almost broke my spirit but knew it would pass and kept moving

I’m hooked

Bring on the 100milers

Lots of work ahead training for the Northen Ireland Hunter Qualifiers.

Luna is still so green only a good year bringing her on, but the work the youngest has done is really starting to show as she plans for 1meter fences at the next show

“When we look at professional athletes, we often wonder what the magic trick is, the exact buttons we need to push to advance and thrive like them.

The bad news is also the good news:

There is no magic trick, no buttons, and no secret sauce”

This is my favourite gate

It is the gate out my back garden straight onto my local trails

They aren’t as vertical as Chamonix

They aren’t as vast as Colorado

But they are mine and they are beautiful

I feel grateful to have them every day I get to run on them

I just set another PB for a 10k

Had a track day threshold workout scheduled so just said fuck it and let’s see what a 10k looks like on a track

45:17 - can’t believe it

Back to intervals and long runs now - but know I have a sub 44 in me…

Jared Beasley ran one of Laz’ backyard ultras and after stopping beat himself up

“Why did I quit?”

“I quit because it was uncomfortable”

Only 38 pages in and we hit on one, if not the main, issue at the core of almost all problems of modern society - “avoidance of discomfort”

This year is easy being really easy and hard being really hard

My A race this year has a lot of vert and will be 22+ hours if I aim for a mid pack finish.

Worried about cardiac decoupling at that duration so gotta stack that z2 in training

honest z2 not z3-ish z2 like last year

2 goals this year: pace & durability

Today was supposed to be an easy road run so took new shoes out for a spin

Clear within 5 steps these are not “easy run” shoes - so I decide to lean into it and go for it

Just set my 10k PB- 47min - on hills!

Was not even trying

LFG 2026!!!

We finally have the middle section floor removed and the catwalk in

Turning the middle of the house into a double height section was an exciting part of the remodel

Getting the teleporter in with the steel for the catwalk…was interesting

Self builds are a continuous problem solving adventure

This is the most interesting article on an ultra runner I have ever read

His entire approach really speaks to me. The whole idea of “clarity vs competition” as the process in his race and where his mind goes and how it works as he runs

Wow

It’s a long and must read article

Two hill intervals this week.

Today set of 10 30sec strides at max on 5% followed by 10 on 8%

Have a local trail section that I have a history with just right for the task

A couple easy miles either end..

Will be sore in morning…

Way deeper than expected.

Holy shit never seen my local trail like this. We got absolutely hammered by a storm.

Running through a fucking river where there shouldn’t be one for miles.

Super wild and fun!

Ireland is funny, it has all the seasons but how much you get of each in a given year is a dice roll

As sept comes there is a mild panic - “oh shite the long are days over”

Then by Nov - “sure it’s cozy now”

Mid day sun - looks like it’s setting, started lashing rain 5min later

First night run of the winter season.

Have a love/hate with long night runs. Sometimes they can feel like a real adventure and sometimes a chore…

A shocking amount of detraining occurred in the 4 week break I took.

Vo2 dropped by 5%
Average bpm for a given pace up by 8

Bitter pill to swallow

Bio mechanical still strong so body wants to run instinctive paces

This should have been a mid tempo run but ended up threshold
