Sause: Am a tailender boomer (born after 1960) that grew up watching my elder generational siblings just quit out of frustrations and despair. Tuned in, turned on and dropped out.

It was point in fact the Silents (b. 1925 to 1945) that put Ronald Reagan into the White House in 1980, and put America on this path. They also assassinted the progressive leaders (JFK, RFK, MLK, MalcolmX) of the 60's and shattered their boomer children's hopes for a better future.

Chicago IS built different. It's got one of the most rough-and-tumble histories of any city in the US. In recent years past, there have been literal rolling gun-battles between rival crime gangs. The ghost of Mayor Daly (look him up) still rules the public's headspace there. Don't mess with Chicago.

As someone that cut the cord and got rid of the TV in 1999 (really!) I'm not at all surprised broadcasters gave up w/o any fight.

Two words tell you all you need to know as to why:

Brendan Carr.

The FCC is not headed by an apolitical official.

Carr's a Trump goon & the FCC is toast.

Already have an account on old.lemmy.zip! Same username. I'm stepping into the gaming comms first, and the old lemmy site looks like old.reddit with RES (for the night mode) - which I used on reddit. It's familiar with the layout which I like and can navigate easily. Love it!

We forget Russia ignores the past such as the Holodomor that saw how many Ukraians dead under the boot of Joseph Stalin?

Ukraine does not want to be poor for the so-called historical glory of Russia anymore.

Nor should Russians in 2025 be poor for that same tired "glory".

Thanks! I'm going to lurk for a while then do a bit of digging to see what the whole 'federated' server thing is like.. I take it that it can be somewhat like the old usenet servers of the past? That is what I cut my online teeth on before ISP's dropped most access.

I was aiming for the games stuff. Awoke this morning to find a letter from Reddit - and I didn't send them an appeal to begin with - so that was likely a response to me deleting what I could and leaving a goodbye message, and also a hello and welcome to Lemmy one! TBH, it was getting stale on reddt.

Oh, DEFINITELY the site is being modded by AI and it took less than a minute to decide I was banned. I spent the evening using old reddit to slip back into my account and delete everything I could. If I'm gone, so are my comments since words now have value to train AI with.. I got what I could, tho!

I got bumped from Reddit today after 14 years. Said some metaphorically salty things about President Miller that the mod-bots there didnt like. Oh well. Better waters to swim in elsewhere..

Oh yeah.. they all are. I managed to leverage the de-sync to my advantage and cleared my facebook posts - years worth - the right way. It was not fun. I have zero content there anymore and it shows me total strangers to add as friends when I login now.. Yay!!

Security from whom? So Russia was being overrun by Ukranians? OR is it more likely that the Ukranian government was looking to sell it's *vast* natural gas reserves directly into the EU market, leaving Russia to sell (at a lower price point) to the Chinese. Can't have that.. Oh no.
