FTC, in an organizational first, urges cert. grant ahead of key Friday conference at #SCOTUS.

The facts are INSANE, with cops so corrupt that David Simon made a show about it, but hopefully the justices take it up & fix this issue.

"Forty-two judges went so far as to say that the Supreme Court’s emergency orders had caused 'some' or 'major' harm to the public’s perception of the judiciary[,] [including] nearly half of the Republican-nominated judges."

Tragic news from Canada where the Canadian Supreme Court has gone from the official dress on the left to the one on the right
Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in bright red wooly gowns, with a beige trim. It looks sort of like a Santa robe The Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in black gowns with a bright white kravat, and two thin red vertical lines on the side of the robe

OT25 just started & we've already had some recusals docs.google.com/spreadsheets...:
— All justices but Jackson have recused
— Kagan is only one to explain hers
— Alito leads with 4 (of 11 total), all due to his/Martha Ann's stocks
— 5 due to prior judge/SG work
— 2 due to a justice being sued

She's neven explained her recusals. Only Kagan and Jackson do. Once or twice, all three liberals recused, & an explanation was included in the order, but it wasn't Sotomayor who typed it out

Pretty sad — albeit not at all surprising — that a random federal judge in Oregon has higher ethical standards than the justices of the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court justices are holding more events this month than any other month since we started tracking this, if not ever.

204!

That's how many SCOTUS events we've tracked this year; Justice Thomas' talk last night at CUA was 193, & 11 more have been planned.

This is the earliest in the year we've gotten to 200 since we started tracking events after SCOTUSMap's 2020 demise.

This is really bad. It won’t get the popular opposition the Kimmel incident did, but it’s way more sweeping and authoritarian. This is an effort to bring the full force of government down on any and all opposition to this administration.

Such as: what has been each justice's vote in each emergency order this term?

Why have you recused in 14 petitions this term, & why haven't you offered an explanation in the orders?

What "best practices" on ethics (p. 15 supremecourt.gov/about/Code-o...) have you instituted since Nov. 2023? (2/2)

Justice Barrett is at the @scotusblog.com Summit today.

If we were to ask her a question, here's what it would be:

You say you want Americans to "read the opinion" to get a better sense of what #SCOTUS does. Agreed.

But there are countless things the justices do that aren't in opinions. (1/2)

In a video-recorded event, Justice Kavanaugh dismisses cameras in SCOTUS but muses that the Court "will keep" live argument audio "forever, probably."

There are still several states that require judges to include a home address on their financial disclosure reports.

We're working to get state judiciaries to put an end to this requirement & expect to have some positive news in this front later this week.

A government shutdown is a terrible idea:

— Courts need funding to stay open & deliver justice (PACER/filing fees aren't enough)

— The Marshals needs funding to continue investigating a record number of threats against judges

— Federal defenders & jurors & probation officers need to get paid

The new federal judiciary financial disclosure regs are far afield from the intent of the Cornyn-Coons Courthouse Ethics bill that we worked on with @pogo.org & @free.law, & they explain why it's taking so damn long to get judges' disclosures posted online

Given the state of our judiciary, and the brewing conflict between the Supreme Court and lower court judges, this is perhaps the most important event that nobody knows about right now.
