I highly recommend Sir_Superhero’s video on the topic. Only downside to it is that it’s 2 hours long, but it’s full of all the Symbiote lore you need.

From what I know, it’s only Symbiotes and hosts that have a perfect bond like Carnage and Cletus Kasady that can do the body horror stuff like splitting themselves in half and then reforming.
For non-perfect bonds like Venom, it’s basically a suit that can heal you and set bones, but that’s it.
