snippet from my hongsan wip: So he listened. He snuck into the back of public houses and listened to the laborers' meetings. He heard the discontent, the strife, the pain caused by his father's taxations and decrees. He saw hungry children in the street. He wrote clumsy, determined screeds about the unfair treatment of the poor and posted them with no subtlety, caught and chastised over and over, but never stopping. Cultivating his expression and sharpening his opinions. He became more of a problem as the discontent grew; not quite a uniting voice, but one of polish and wit, one among many agitators, and a constant, digging thorn in his father's side, never as interested in marriage or courtly proceedings as his own pursuit of thought and justice. He needn't have experienced the shock he did at being sold off.

Vampires and werewolves are commonly believed to be inherently incompatible. While Yeosang is more or less skeptical, he didn't peg the assumption to be entirely baseless: for instance, he loves his personal space, and Wooyoung, unfortunately, shared the sentiment to a concerning degree. A sudden craving for an egg-and-ham sandwich had led him to the convenience store around the corner at 2 AM, where he was eventually subjected to the shady cashier eyeing him from head to toe with a wolfish, knowing whistle. Something happened in between, and Yeosang left the store with a few won less rich, a cold pre-packaged sandwich, and a new number added to his contacts under JWY. If it were up to Yeosang, he wouldn't exactly call them friends. Yeosang couldn't remember ever reaching out first, and Wooyoung only came to him when he was thoroughly bored out of his mind. Neither of them minded the lack of enthusiastic initiation, though. In a sense, they were probably pretty close: enough for Wooyoung to be Yeosang's first and only guest after Seonghwa's passing, enough for Yeosang to accept Wooyoung's excessive touchy-feeliness, and even enough for them to eventually travel together abroad. Wooyoung had waved off their inadequate planning, "We can just figure things out as we go." Yeosang was inclined to object, but the hefty sum from both of their savings plus his inheritance from Seonghwa made a convincing case. The light from outside bounces off Jongho's eyes, giving his wide, dark irises a shine not unlike Wooyoungs when he had sprung the absurd proposal on him back then. Through his scattered memory, Yeosang supposes it was also worded roughly the same way— "Let's go outside!"

part 1 of 3 of drabbleish hongsan fic: The tent flap falls shut behind him. San is facing away. Hongjoong is thankful for the grace of it — not being subjected to the intensity of his eyes — for a breathless half-second, before his own gaze slides too easily down the slope of his broad shoulders, the dip where his spine sits, dripping like his bathwater. His short, dark hair clings wetly together in dark little teeth. The scars over his shoulders look pinker right after a hot soak. The air feels oppressively heavy as Hongjoong drags in a mouthful of it. "I wish you hadn't seen that." San rubs through his hair again with a thin, clean linen, trying futilely to dry the thicket. "Seen me like that." Marching into camp with a multitude. Staring ahead with a set, solemn jaw as his lieutenants shouted orders for food, for sharing, for places for little ones to lay their heads. part 2 of 3: Caked in dirt and blood; stinking. Hongjoong ladling out from a huge pot of hastily-made porridge and smelling him as he marched by, stomach turning, metal-sweet-sour; hearing his gruff dismissal of every suggestion that he leave and get himself together. Every inch the warmonger, thoughtless and violent, unfeeling, hilt-to-tip of his sword sticky and stained. "Such is my husband's fate, and so such is mine." And now, San is turning toward him. He's flushed from his bath, eyes heavy in his thin face. He's not sporting any new wounds outside of some bruises and scrapes, and Hongjoong finds himself faint with the relief of it, sinking into his low vanity chair. It makes it easier for him to conceal his tremble as San approaches, shaking hands curled together in his lap. He should be so lucky to be widowed, he should be freed at the tip of some monster's sword or arrow, he should be allowed freedom at the excuse of sorrow — part 3 of 3: He should say no, when San kneels in supplication. His damp hair soaks into Hongjoong's long sleeves, the front of his working robes. He sighs, bone-deep, and the feeling of it over Hongjoong's wrist is enough to send his fingers to work, stroking over cheek, over eyelashes, over the base of his skull.
