Jumpman Mario is no less of a Mario than Steamboat Willie is a Mickey Mouse, and nobody questions that origin. Yoshi wasn't the protagonist of SMW so it's different for him. Even so, Luigi gets his true anniversary acknowledged so Mario should too.

I don't think Donkey Kong was any less of a Mario game just because it wasn't named after the playable character. In fact I consider the DK and Mario franchises to be one and the same until DKC, when DK split off for his own adventures while still being a regular presence in Mario spinoffs.
