Part of why it's nasty of the writing to keep doing that to y'shtola just bc she's a woman over 30. We assumed the last matoya over 30 was a mother bc of her gender and look what she did about that. Locked all her memories of the kid in a broom bc it made her too sad to think about.

Y'shtola and Thancred are best friends bc neither of them had childhoods so to speak. Y'shtola's case being obviously less severe. But Matoya initially didn't want a student and appears to have never treated her like a child (and now we have her self-consciousness and embarassment over childishness)
