One thing I’ve learned from 8 years of Atari Archive research: 70s gaming, whether computer, coin op or console based, informed a vast swath of stuff that hit in the 80s and onward. They are foundational works and in a number of cases, still pretty damn fun!

My favorite thing about culture is when artists who seem new and dangerous wind up decades later performing to universal cheers on the teenage mutant ninja turtles float at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

What is the deal with the SNES and Genesis ports of Chase HQ games? They have the weirdest not-great road engines. The PCE and Speccy ones manage pretty well.

Happy #ScanlineSunday! Here’s Nigel Mansell on SNES. It’s quite good.

I’ve found a few YouTube channels I like which dissect old effects:
White Pointer Gaming
Martin Piper
Coding Secrets/GameHut

…anything else? Looking for more stuff to watch.

The xennial thing is real

There used to be a huge split between computer and console/arcade gaming in the 80s. Generally if you wanted adventure games, strategy games, simulations, or even RPGs, you got a computer. If you wanted expertly designed action games which many computer gamers did not appreciate, you got a console.

People talk about Boomer Shooters, but Doom’s more of a gen X/millennial thing. My dad is basically a boomer and this is the kind of stuff he played. Doom ushered in a new era that killed off companies like SSI by Epic, id, and others.

My dad came from tabletop gaming. It’s why we got a computer.

I can never decide which Contra game is my favorite. The 8-bit ones I think are the most flawless. 3 and CHC bring the bombast though.

One of my favorite PC Engine games. If you liked Granada you’ll probably like this too. I’m surprised more people don’t talk about it.

Happy bday #x360. I got into it mid 2010s and it’s a pretty solid system. Here’s my small collection. Out of these I like Ridge Racer 6 and OutRun 2 the most. I need to put more time into some of the others as well but those two just end up glued to the tray whenever I have this console out 🤣

Happy #RandomGameSaturday! Here’s Turrican II for Amiga. It’s also on Atari ST and DOS, and got completely mangled to become Universal Soldier on Genesis. Though not without its flaws, it’s a great hybrid of exploration and running and gunning inspired by games such as Psycho Nics Oscar and Metroid.

So it is possible to do 60fps 3d on the sega megadrive by using a very exotic indexing method to simulate 2 colors + alternating lines + fast DMA. Totally interlaced my brain 🙃
