If she can't live in the 1970s or a galaxy far, far away, Evie Kelley might as well write about them. She scribbles angsty YA sci-fi & stories set in the era of mood rings, platform shoes & the eternal debate of who's cuter, Starsky or Hutch.

🫖Teapot Tuesdays (a day late)! In the "more shameless self-promotion" department, a classic brown Betty pot and the coming of age, 1976-set My Bicentennial are the perfect cuppa-and-a-book combo. Enjoy!

Hey gang! It's the last day to pick up my debut book MY BICENTENNIAL at the special release week price. I had a blast writing this mostly true coming of age tale of prom, platform shoes, and the far-out year 1976. It's DY-NO-MITE!

#TimeTravelAuthors Day 13
Jake thinks I'm a coward. Glo thinks I'm weak & that I'll run from my #timetravel mission. But Sully? He thinks I'm "a real piece of work" & not in an insult kind of way. In a "you had me at time travelling librarian & I'd fight a thousand hell beasts for you" kind of way.
Square image with a lavender background and a red border. Headline: Time Has Met Its Match in Beryl Blue. Footer: The Beryl Blue, Time Cop Adventures in Time. At the center of the image are pictures of three book covers, with Beryl Blue, Time Cop Book 1 in the middle, featuring the main character wearing a WWII-era WAC Army coat and caught in the headlights of the jeep racing up behind her. On the left is Book 2, It's Been A Long, Long Time, with a vibrant pinkish-purple background and the setting sun. Beryl, in the foreground wearing a summery red dress, looks back at a shiny new blue 1946 car and a 3-story building; light spills out of the building's upper floor window, framing the silhouette of a man gazing out at Beryl. Book 3, Every Time We Say Goodbye, is on the right; it's twilight and the background is awash color, from blue to purple to lavender. A row of old fashioned streetlights spill buttery yellow light down on a sidewalk. Beryl, in the foreground in a sleek, short sleeved blue dress circa 1953, looks back at a man wearing a trench coat and a midcentury-style fedora hat, who is walking away.

The 70s. A time of platform shoes, mood rings, body suits, spackling on enough blue eyeshadow to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel - and the setting for my new book, MY BICENTENNIAL.

How did this mostly true tale come about? Find out in my newsletter: emails.janetrayestevens.com/t9r7m7p1k7
A book cover with the title My Bicentennial above the image of the lower legs and feet of a girl standing on a bathroom scale. The girl is wearing purple polyester pants and orange platform shoes with spongy white soles. The author's name, Evie Kelley, is inside a silver triangle where the weight numbers would typically be. A vintage mid-1970s makeup ad for Maybelline eyeshadow featuring a pretty young blonde model painting her eyelids a neon shade of blue. A collection of small plastic cases swoop by the left side of her face. Inside each case is a small brush and an oblong "eyeshadow pan" container holding the pressed powder eyeshadow in a rainbow of colors, from chocolate brown to pale pink and with a plethora of the 70s signature color, blue. At the top of the picture, above the image of the woman is a headline, "They feel smooth as cream," followed by a paragraph of describing how if you use the product you will "see your eyes come alive" then, in larger text, "New Ultra Velvet and Ultra Frost Powder Shadows by Maybelline."

My fave person is Sully. But not always. When I met that bossy & oh-so-hot WWII soldier I was hurtled across time to protect, I didn't like him. Well, I liked him a little. OK, I fell head over girdle for the guy. Just took a while to realize that.

Square image of a book cover with a twenty-something white woman in the foreground. She has dark wavy hair, bright red lipstick, and wears a long, olive green wool coat of World War II Army vintage. She looks anxiously over her shoulder at a cityscape at night, with searchlight beams cutting across a teal-colored sky and lighting up old-fashioned propellor-powered airplanes. In between the woman and the city, a jeep cuts across a field filled with barbed wire. The jeep's bright yellow lights beam on the fleeing woman. The author's name is in white at the top of the illustration: Janet Raye Stevens, Award-Winning Author. At the bottom of the picture is the book's title, Beryl Blue, Time Cop.

Can you dig it? My alter-ego Evie Kelley’s debut book, MY BICENTENNIAL, is out today.

This #comingofage tale of the far-out Bicentennial year 1976, follows Massachusetts high school senior Deidre Daly’s often hilarious (and occasionally disastrous) attempts to fit in.

Being saved from certain death in my library by a woman dressed like Dorothy on her way to Oz? Weird. Getting yanked into her alleged time machine? Weirder still. But what happened next reached all levels of weirdness & I'd tell you the odd tale right now except...spoilers!

A rectangular image of a full book cover. On the right hand side, the title My Bicentennial is above the image of the lower legs and feet of a girl standing on a bathroom scale. The girl is wearing purple polyester pants and orange platform shoes with spongy white soles. The author's name, Evie Kelley, is inside a silver triangle on the scale where the weight numbers would typically be. The left side of the image shows a living room with 1970s style furniture, an orange shag rug, a rotary dial telephone on a table, and a plump teenage girl in purple pants and an orange blouse sitting on a couch putting on the platform shows depicted in the other side of the cover. Superimposed over that image is the book's title, My Bicentennial, and subtitle, A Mostly True Tale of the Far-Out '70s, followed by what the book's about text.

No surprise the first time I speak I'm yelling. Have to. The time runner I'm chasing just won't stop. It's 1977, the perp's on roller skates, threatening the timeline each second he zips along a seaside boardwalk. I finally catch him & face questions of my own sticky past.

Our fish pond frogs are looking quite judgemental these days. (Can't blame them though)

Twice while out walking, I've passed cheeky teens who shouted, "Hey, Grandma!" as I went by. They didn't say a word to my equally gray haired husband. Though tempted to yell back "You *wish* I was your granny, whippersnappers," I simply MYOB and moved along. 😜

The time skip wasn't pleasant. The machine clanked like a rollercoaster car struggling up a hill. I held my breath when I rode those death contraptions as a kid & I did now, anticipating & dreading the moment we’d hurtle over the top & plunge into the abyss.
