ICYMI, this weekend USDA announced that it would not field the Food Security Supplement to the Current Population Survey - the source of information about the state of food insecurity and hunger in America - this December.

The press release is full of falsehoods:

President Trump's tariffs are expected to cost households an average of $2,400 per year, according to the Budget Lab at Yale University.

They estimate food prices could rise more than 3 percent and car prices could rise 12 percent.
Cars, coffee and clothing are poised to get pricier with new tariffs
The Trump administration’s latest tariffs are expected to drive up prices for U.S. consumers, with costs rising for everyday items such as groceries and clothes.

Politicizing federal statistics compromises the ability of policymakers to properly analyze the state of the economy and develop the best policies to ensure prosperity, write former chairs of the Council of Economic Advisers Cecilia Rouse and Gregory Mankiw. Read their new op-ed:
Opinion | Firing the BLS commissioner will come back to haunt Trump
It will compromise policymakers’ ability to analyze the economy and ensure prosperity.

I’ve harped on the media for very poor reporting of the ways jobs numbers are produced, but I also want to highlight good examples such as @bencasselman.bsky.social at New York Times and this piece by NBC News. Good, informative economic journalism is possible. www.nbcnews.com/business/eco...
Jobs data revisions are common. Here's how the process works.
The commissioner Trump fired over “rigged” jobs report most likely didn’t have a hand in assembling the report, former BLS officials say.

Immigration!

It may well be that this is what a healthy labor market in the US looks like now.

Labor supply growth has come to a screaming halt. This is the emp growth the US can sustain right now.

This bill is more budget busting than big and beautiful. We helped balance the budget but Trump’s plan unbalances our finances and our country.

Young women are now working at higher rates than ever, pursuing careers and financial stability, while young men are staying home and taking on a greater share of caregiving, according to new research from ‪@laurenhlb.bsky.social‬ at @hamiltonproject.org:

Women in their 20s and 30s are working more than ever before
And the workforce looks different than it did a generation ago, as more young men than ever before are staying home to care for family instead.

In both the House and Senate, payment error rates will determine what share of SNAP benefit payments states are forced to pay. We're (hopefully) going to get FY2024 payment error rates in the next few days, but look! A map for FY2023.

This policy looks like a recipe for ending SNAP in most states.

U.S. workforce standards have changed little since the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) was signed into law on this day in 1938.

In her proposal, @betseystevenson.bsky.social makes the case for a modernization of the FLSA that would give all workers the right to earn paid time off.

Confused about work requirements? @laurenhlb.bsky.social is here to help!
hamiltonproject.org
Do work requirements work? @laurenhlb.bsky.social‬ lays out the facts:
1. SNAP helps recipients get back on their feet and back to work.
2. SNAP work requirements don’t increase employment or earnings.
3. Work requirements punish low-wage workers and the unemployed, even those searching for jobs.

It’s very easy to fly yourself in circles speculating about whether any particular provision runs afoul of the Byrd Rule. But zooming out with your binoculars for a second, there are two important questions to ask beyond “what’s the substantive impact of the provision?”

When there are more SNAP participants who are looking for but cannot find a job (the green bars) than who have one (blue bars), the argument that "only 30 percent are working" so we need more work requirements deflates.
