New post comparing my experiences of spending three months in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur each → eric.fun/bkk-kl
Bangkok vs Kuala Lumpur?
As an expat, choosing between Bangkok and KL turned out to be much harder than I thought. While I've mostly made up my mind, I wanted to do a brain …

I don’t have a permanent office. Most of the time I’m working out of different coworking spaces around the world. Here’s a minimal mobile setup I’ve refined to 2.3 kg that’s been with me across 8+ countries this year.

My Mobile Work Setup
This year, I've spent time in over 8 countries with just one small backpack (ULA Dragonfly 30L). See my previous post about my one bag setup. Living …

Great update! @leaflet.pub is turning out to be a fun platform.
New for Leaflet Publications: custom domains!

in the spirit of "A Domain of One's Own", we've added a new option for customizing your publication identity ✨

default — [publication].leaflet.pub
now — use any domain you own!

Working on theming too, for even more pub personalization :)

Looks great so far. Another +1 for custom domain support.

Obsidian yesterday announced Bases which makes them more comparable to Notion: bsky.app/profile/obsi...

Logseq is also releasing their DB re-write soon.
Introducing Bases, a new core plugin that lets you turn any set of notes into a powerful database. With Bases you can organize everything from projects to travel plans, reading lists, and more.

Bases are now available in Obsidian 1.9.0 for early access users.

I recently gave a friend the same feedback. As a non-technical user, he wanted to set up Wordpress site to serve a 4-page site. My recommendation was to use Lovable.dev to create a single html file, then create and modify other pages via Chatgpt/Gemini. No need for a CMS and can be free.
Nearly every Squarespace, Wix, etc site can and should be a static site. And instead of decomposing your concept for a site into some CMS abstractions, you can leave it light and only do those abstractions over time. But there's also lots of repetitive tasks over time...

US has amazing national parks, with great diversity too. Probably my favorite thing about living in the US was national parks and the wilderness.

Cloudflare is one of my favorite companies, and their dev services like Workers, D1, and R2 are super interesting. But almost everything they do is really focused on JS/TypeScript, even their CLI which is all Node. I just wish #Cloudflare wasn't so locked into the JS ecosystem, which I can’t stand.

What's your overall impression of the DB version so far? It looks overly complex and not intuitive. Feels like they'll need another year to make it usable for the average user.

Definitely important attributes... My non-negotiable became good mobile app / sync as I'm on the move these days and don't have access to laptop some days.

I played with silverbullet.md and loved it. I'm considering self hosting it at some point. Similar to Obsidian but simpler and open-source.

Great write up. What’s your overall impression of the DB version so far? Seems like there’s lots of room for usability improvements.

Logseq was my favorite for 4 years but I just switched back to Workflowy. I had to give up privacy and local-first but needed a perfect outliner that’s simple and smooth.

1Password is the perfect example of enshittification. Even the free version of Bitwarden works better for me now. I also liked Proton Pass, but they need more time to add and enhance features.

Very happy to see #Bluesky is getting serious traction now. I want this tech to succeed.

- Their current backlog is endless. No reason to prioritize this.

- Threads' user base is the least technical text-based social media users (compared to Twitter, Mastodon, Bluesky). Over 95% won't understand, or care.

I don't think it'll happen.
July 11, 2023 at 11:48 PM
I'm highly doubtful that Threads will embrace Fediverse and Activityhub.

- Threads gains absolutely nothing from Fediverse / ActivityPub integration.

- It's major technical burden to implement and maintain for zero benefit.

Not likely :)

Cloudflare, Route 53 etc. all seem to have hard limits on number of DNS records you can have. I wonder why.
