As a former activist within Dem spaces, my ongoing thesis is that the party’s greatest strength is also its weakest aspect- we emphasize coalition building and consensus at every level of the party, from young Democrat elections and ADEM slates upwards.

Deference is everything in this party.

Today we joined local leaders in SF to support Asm @ib2real.bsky.social's AB 1537, the No Side Jobs for ICE Act. Our coalition is proud to sponsor this important bill.

California bill would bar local officers from taking second job with ICE
Supporters of the bill say that California, as a sanctuary state, shouldn't allow its officers to perform immigration enforcement duties.

These 75 Democrats joined Republicans to "express gratitude" to ICE agents and call for greater local and state collaboration with ICE.

It was never enough to flip Republican seats - so let us set the menu on the type of progressive leaders running for office.

Get involved with your local primary fights with orgs like @caworkingfamilies.bsky.social - that's one pathway of many to enduring political change.

As for myself - I am going to continue doing what I've always done. Stand up alongside immigrants, renters, and working people on the margins of racial capitalism in local spaces in California.

Whether our opponents are weak-willed and docile Democrats or fascist Republicans, I care not.

While I generally believe progressives are ahead of the curve on courage (aoc, crockett, etc), it leaves room for moderates/establishment types to really think more boldly about what can be done to resist Trump/Elon at every level of politics.

The rules that got us here won't save us either.

Bernie/AOC have more trust with voters (even with non-progressives who don’t always agree) because their messaging reflects the fights they took in their own careers to get here. We all know they fought uphill within the party - and their scars reflect authenticity in that sense.

Why would I trust Congressional Democrats in safe blue districts to understand the base, when they have very little incentive to engage the grassroots?

That's why my favorite people in CA are the municipal/state leg candidates, with their nose to the ground on housing justice and racial justice.
March 15, 2025 at 12:20 AM
So the muscles being trained are deference to norms, decorum, institutions, seniority - which makes it very tough in situations where the base is looking for a fight.

And in this moment- we're looking for fighters, not collaborators! Courage, not compliance! I do not want Dems eager to go along.

Conflict is to be avoided at every turn, wait for your turn on the election merry go round, don’t shoot your shot on high risk elections or primaries (unless you are rich or can fundraise), etc

(Go organize in any "blue" stronghold like Los Angeles and there's a logjam of people waiting in line)

Among the material devastation to everyday people, Senate Dems have now blown a hole in their ability to work with the House.

We had an agreed upon plan, House took immense risk, then Senate turned around midway and destroyed it w/ a fear-based, inexplicable abdication.

They own what happens next.

only good photo of me at yesterday's @iceoutofca.bsky.social rally in Sacramento in support of immigrant justice, plus a few choice photos from my camera as well.

I'm as committed as I have ever been to support refugee and migrant rights, and California can do so much more to support this fight.
