Our understanding and empathy for wolves is shaped by our storytelling. When we think of wolves as ruthless, dangerous creatures, it’s easier for us to allow senseless, cruel wolf killings to continue.

Even in areas where wolf populations are at their densest, attacks on humans are incredibly rare. Only two people have died from a wolf encounter in 100 years. Of course, you should keep your distance from wolves in the wild, the same way you would with any wild animal.

Many people don’t know that the popular concept of an “alpha wolf” comes from an outdated study on captive wolves -- and that the idea of “alpha” and “beta” wolves has been widely dismissed by modern researchers.

In reality, “surplus killing” is very rare for wolves. A wolf has to stay lean if she wants to keep up with quick-footed elk and deer. That means she’ll only risk hunting -- which can often be dangerous or fruitless for wolves -- to find the food she needs to survive.
