There has been accounts of men like him getting close to the end and having panic attacks and other psychosis about their history of criminality. I believe he is dealing with mortality as eminent or he would not talk about it. Or the opposite of out of sight out of mind. Seeing the train coming.

Well he doesn't think that he is set for Heaven according to his own words. At least he's considering it. I must admit. None of us could make it to heaven without Jesus and his mercy, however his mercy must be asked for and received.
