This MT is so good and so true! To me, it represented the power that women can have over a community's social guidelines as well #367britlit
#367britlit MT The communities women flocking to real milkman's side could be the beginning of the renouncers losing their power over the community.

Even today, how we frame our ideas and who we present ourselves as has a definitive impact on how they will be received. Sometimes I wish I could write my essays as "George" #367britlit

especially medical information! lots of important info goes misunderstood or not heard because of lack of translators. i've had to translate to BSL bc lack of sign interpreters for my mom so many times and I'm not even fluent...

#367britlit Okwe and Senay remind me so much of the "maybe-relationship" in Milkman

"You are an illegal, you have no position here" Bro is he just supposed to dispose of the heart and ask no questions because of his legal status?? does he not also deserve answers and understanding and the right to knowledge????? #367britlit

#367britlit MT: The two different settings of the book (the UK and Antigua) represent Barry and Carmel on some level, and it would be interesting to compare in terms of a tendency to prefer chosen home vs. birthplace!
April 10, 2025 at 6:04 PM
#367britlit It's actually so interesting that Barry "coming out" is kept secret by default. So far, that's like 3-4 people that know and avoid the topic... I thought it was for money, but perhaps it's also out of a special blend of familial obligation and individual belief?
April 8, 2025 at 6:02 PM
#367britlit MT: Barry's double life goes largely unnoticed by Carmel in part because she has her own issues (ex. postpartum depression) but also because her own life is so conflicted by putting education and independence at odds with her assumed gender role of mother and wife.

#367britlit I liked the way he interjects (Un-for-tu-nate-ly) into sentences. Honestly, I love a good catchphrase!

#367britlit MT: Middle sister's and eldest sister's tense exchange after Milkman's death shows the way that those who have received misfortune in the community are predisposed to lash out and cause others pain as well- it's a sad, deadly cycle.

#367britlit MT: "Great and sustained happiness" is too much to ask from marriage because all of the relationships in Milkman are tempered by fear of the extreme, whether that is fear of an extreme situation or fear of an extreme emotion impeding rationality.

I unfortunately understood the word "feminist" being a no-no word for middle sister... rural town vibes! #367britlit

i also saw this and felt it was quite accurate to us 🫢

#367britlit MT: The way that 'wee sisters' discuss the 'sportiness' of menstruation is symbolic of their gender in-betweenness; they are yet to undergo puberty, which allows them more freedom of discussion in regard to the functions of gender, while middle sister does not have this same freedom.

MT: Katurian's attachment to his stories is a way of preserving his legacy, but it could also represent the attachment to literature as an escape or an alternative to a totalitarian regime/dictatorship. #367britlit

MT: While Briony knows that Lola and Paul Marshall's marriage is wrong, she is unable to blame Paul because of class and gender differences-- what women and girls say is twisted to fit the narrative of men, especially to suit their own purposes, which is why she cannot recant. #367britlit

MT: The way that Robbie uses more detail-oriented language to describe his experience in the war makes me think the changes to him in Pt 2 are irreversible; to me, it's especially foreshadowing that he may not return home the same person, if at all. #367britlit
