I’m grateful to Terence Winch for choosing “Nocturnal” to appear in Best American Poetry 2025, and to @pshares.bsky.social and Laila Lalami and John Skoyles for first giving a home to the poem. This third photo is an image from the poem. #bestamericanpoetry2025

Such a fun afternoon at #ACapellaBookstore in Atlanta. Thanks in particular to @jamesdavismay.bsky.social & @chelsearathburn.bsky.social for making the drive and the time. And to the artistic bookstore attendant who made this amazing boat for #EasyVictimstotheCharitableDeceptionsofNostalgia.

Today, Otis’s song request en route to school was “Go All the Way to Hell.”

[see also Traveling Wilbury’s, “Tweeter and the Monkey Man”]
Otis draws a discrepancy between real and not-real clowns. The latter are all fakes because they have to put on make up and costume to be clowns. The former are clearly a nightmare, as they are born in clown face, hair, and feet.

“Connections are something the reader will find in abundance in this volume as the poet weaves stories and symbols and wonderful language into a truly satisfying example of high quality, highly readable, poetry.“
“See this ball, Mama?”
“Yeah, Otis! It’s so cool!”
“Yeah, it’s not a candy.”
“Nope.”
“I know because I tasted it.”
End of the semester sunshine: Student popped in to say that my class prepared him to do better in his others this semester and complimented, "You have me fighting battles on paper, they have me digging foxholes." #metaphor
My kid asked to do his turkey disguise project as a vampire bat so I figured out how to do a vampire bat but then we went to the zoo the next weekend and I learned that vampire bat is an actual kind of bat so my 4 yo schooled me. #turkeydisguiseproject #vampirebat #googlyeyes #tomtheturkey #otislove
It’s a collective point; we are all in this together, Chlesaa.
