Before I could respond, Cedar, Minister of Perviness, interjected with a less than friendly smile as he eyed my cleavage. “And can you afford the game girl? The buy-in is 10,000 Asterism chips.”
I side-eyed Cedar with a look of annoyance as I turned my body to face him directly, my shoulders back and head high. “You can address me as General Maddock, commander of the Azurite military.”
I reached into my purse and placed a diplomacy coin on the table. It was the size of a small coaster and solid gold. Its middle was hollowed out for a tiny vial to fit a magical contract scroll for authenticity. The coin represented a country's entire royal wealth; they were normally only given to the highest-ranking members in a government. “I assume this settles that answer for you?”
I looked across the table at Maverick and gave him a smile tilting my head. “You can call me Mair, though.” I said warmly. I took my seat as attendants rushed to place poker chips in front of me and the crowd broke into gossip about my reputation.
Maverick tried to conceal a laugh with a cough as Cedar’s face went red as he stammered out, “We… we all assumed General Maddock was a man.”
“Yes, men do tend to assume that don't they?” I smiled coldly.

Beckett has a five-year plan. The only thing standing between him and his promotion to COO is the buyout of a small real estate company. Well, that, and the attractive receptionist, Nat, who lives to make his job hell. One wrong move has her pinned underneath him, stirring feelings within him he thought died a long time ago.

When her sugar daddy ends their contact, Nat is abandoned, broke, and screwed without his kitchen she used for her and her best friend’s baking business. In other words, her dreams are burnt to a crisp, which is exactly what her busted oven does to cookies. To relieve stress and ease her anxiety, Nat enters a sex-only relationship with Beckett.

But after Beckett’s cousin sees Nat leaving his house, he makes Nat an offer she can’t refuse. She can live with him rent-free and have full use of his chef’s kitchen, if she pretends to be his girlfriend until his cousin’s wedding. It’s a recipe Nat knows can only end in disaster. When she starts to fall for him, Nat can’t risk her business and fears Beckett will leave the same way every other man in her life has. All the while, Beckett fights his feelings to avoid breaking promises and plans he made with a tombstone four years ago.

Pausing at the green and blue artwork on the wall, I wrinkle my nose. About a week after I started here, one of the personal assistants, Summer, gifted this to me. It looks like shit and resembles a bunch of fucking dicks painted on a canvas.

I stalk out to the lobby, and I’m met with all the bored faces of my colleagues. The junior agents all yawn at their desks, or lean back in their chairs as they scroll through their phones. It’s been a slow week, but I make a mental note about the climate of the office. However one person in particular stands out.

Natasha Marino. The firm’s receptionist, or the bane of my work life existence, as I like to call her. She’s on my list, too.

Strutting up to her reception desk, I press my forearm against it and peer down at her. “Good morning, Nat,” I smile as her brows furrow and her shoulders roll forward. “How’s the new year treating you so far?”

Without looking up, Nat shrugs and continues typing on her computer. “It’s been good up until now,” she mutters. “See, my resolution was to rid myself of everything negative in my life”—she looks up at me through thick lashes and a tight-lipped smile graces her face—“but then I remembered how difficult that would be working here with some people.”

“Some people in this office can be difficult to work with, I agree.” Spoiler: it’s her; she’s the people difficult to work with.
