Today, the UK government has announced a new £170 million HIV Action Plan for England, a major step toward ending new HIV transmissions by 2030.

At the heart of the plan is opt-out testing, pioneered by the @eltonjohnaidsfoundation.org, helping more people get diagnosed and into care.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a safe and highly effective tool to prevent HIV. Taken as a daily pill, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV through sex by about 99% when taken as prescribed. Last year our partners connected 37,000 people to PrEP, tripling our reach between 2023 and 2024!

The pilot of a digital platform in Liverpool is due to launch this month, thanks to funding by Liverpool City Council and the @eltonjohnaidsfoundation.org, which will deliver PrEP directly to patients through the platform, removing the need for in-person consultations.

Now is not the time to pull back support for LGBT people’s health and rights around the world. We have learned from AIDS and other pandemics, abandoning groups where it is morally or politically expedient to do so is not only wrong but dangerous to public health.

Half of the people newly diagnosed with HIV through NHS England’s opt-out A&E testing had dangerously low white blood cell counts, and more than 90% of those newly diagnosed had never been tested for HIV before. This data from @ukhsa.bsky.social shows how crucial routine, stigma-free HIV testing is.
