(US citizens with foreign accounts *totaling* $10,000 USD or more must file an FBAR every year with FinCen. The deadline is the tax deadline, but it's not technically a tax form and doesn't go to the IRS. You don't owe on this, just report. If you don't file this you can be hit with a *big* fine.)

fwiw if any of you American relocate, don't pay someone to do the FBAR for you, just do it yourself. It's really easy actually.

Just go through your statements, find the highest ending daily balance for each foreign account, do the currency conversion using the rates they tell you too, enter it in.

Wow, wow, wow. This has always been legally possible but the law has virtually never been enforced — and now this is the SECOND case I've heard of in the last month (first involving a person with a green card) of a noncitizen being charged for failure to carry their papers.
