After Max accidentally runs his bike into Madison's car, she drives him home, then jet lagged, crashed on the couch before she could drive to her hotel and check in. Enjoying some wine, Max studies her asleep.

Given how tall she was, it seemed her suit was tailored to fit her for the extra length of her legs and arms, and her broad shoulders and hips. She wasn’t dainty, but solid. Her jewelry was understated. Her manner and dress screamed that she was a professional who worked in an office. As she said she had come from New York City, they dressed much more formally than most of Silicon Valley. Her rental car was nothing fancy, a simple mid-sized sedan, yet she mentioned she was going to stay at the Four Seasons. He wondered if her work was paying for it or if she was, until she got an apartment. At $300 a night and up, she wasn’t being particularly frugal, unless she was the one who didn’t book it. Her luggage wasn’t fancy. Her leather purse was well made, black and a classic design, but not one of those bags that trendy designers charge $5,000 for and up, an accessory his little sister kept talking about buying for herself when she “made it.” Her smart phone was not old, but it wasn’t the latest version. If he had to guess, it was that she was mid-level management with eyes on a senior manager’s office with the next promotion. She mentioned a new job, but never said what the position was or where. If she was still there in the morning, he would have to ask.

Even her brother, Hayden, always was given the best her parents could afford. A cold and spiteful glint was in Brer’s eye as her back went straight with umbrage of Nin’s attitude. “Maybe if we were to force you out of the house, that might make you reconsider your options,” her mother threatened. “I’d sooner live in a barn than marry Rhod or the other toothless, withered codgers.” Nin was still untouched and did not want someone with the virility of a limp worm to take her maiden head.

Compared to Oakdore, Dun Fort seems like a city, but it is more like a large town in Iron Age Ireland. She had only heard stories about Dun Fort, so Nin thinks it some larger and grander place from stories.

Nin longed for one of the shell necklaces they were selling, and Aunt Sadhbh bought one for her for a few silver staters. Nin only wore it on special occasions like the seasonal festivals and celebrations; afraid she may break it or the cord fray and lose it if she wore it every day. She was fourteen when it was given to her. Nin was sorely tempted to join the merchants on their travels when they left, but too frightened, growing up on tales of the dangers that awaited her if she were to leave the village.

It was on the road she was currently traveling that her uncle had lost her life over coin.

Nin pulled the blanket up over to cover her face. “We wouldn’t have done anything you didn’t want, but to wake up next to you? That would have made it a great morning.” Nin was internally fighting with herself again. Darach was either the world’s biggest flirt and teased all women this mercilessly or he was going for the long con to steal her gold and was trying to break down her defenses by getting her to trust him.

This is the moment Nin first sees Darach walking upon the road and offers him a ride.

Even from a distance, she could tell that he was tall and broad shouldered. He had medium-colored warm brown hair that came down in thick gentle waves down to the upper middle of his back, and a simple hat to keep the rain off his head made of green wool felt. He was walking in the same direction as she was traveling, so she only saw him from the back wearing a pair of brown breeches, a long tunic of dark green belted, and a dark brown cloak and boots. There was a slight limp in his walk, which caused him to have a slow pace. Having recently suffered from a sprained ankle, she empathized, knowing how difficult it was to walk with a bad ankle or foot. As Barley slowly plodded forward past the stranger, Nin promised herself she would not look. If she did, she may feel compelled to offer the stranger a ride to Ballihazel, or as far as he was traveling on the same road she was for the time being. Holding her breath, she closed her eyes as Barley walked around him. It was when she was a few horse lengths in front of the stranger, the pang of guilt made her stop. ‘Why? Why do I feel compelled to stop and help this stranger,’ she wondered, questioning her sanity, her Aunt Sadhbh drilling her over the years that strangers met on the road are dangerous.

Kindness for the man limping slightly prompted Nin to offer him a ride, and now she worries that he might be a danger to her. The only thing in danger is Nin's virtue, as Darach is a huge flirt, but sincere.

Text: A Sylvan Tale #WIPSnips "special" “Wha–What’s your name,” Nin asked, her voice quivering from nervousness that she had just picked up a strange man by the side of the road and now worrying if he was going to rob her and take all her money, or worse. “Darach.” The way it rolled off his tongue sounded lyrical. Nin’s breath hitched from surprise. That was the name of her best friend, the grand oak who knew all her secrets and listened without judgement. She had only ever spoken the name to herself, whispered only while hiding along the leaves. Darach’s hands were firmly holding her waist, the rumble of his voice in his chest against her back, while hearing his name roll off his tongue made her head spin in a way she had only ever felt when she had drunken some of the strong honey wine her aunt made rarely for special occasions. She had difficulty swallowing, and when she did she nearly gulped aloud, her body feeling strange in close proximity to Darach. Was this fear she was experiencing? She had been afraid before, but this felt different, even if her body was quivering. Her stomach was feeling even more strange, the snake becoming butterflies, while her heart began thundering in her chest and her head feeling a little numb. He leaned his head down just enough so that his mouth hovered over her ear when he sweetly purred, “And what is your name, bláthín?”

While on the road to Port Rowan, the last stop before reaching Mulcráeb within the sacred forest. But to get that info, Nin has to pay the tavern owner 3 gold staters, and she only has 2 left. Darach has an idea.

Flann stood up and looked Darach over, assessing him as a rival. They stood eye to eye, but even though Flann was bulkier, Darach stood without retreating, holding his ground. With a crooked toothy grin, a third of his teeth missing, the pirate asked in a misleadingly friendly manner, “Care to try and take some of that gold off my hands with a bit of arm wrestling?” “It would be my pleasure,” Darach said with sincerely intent, smiling back at him with none of the malice Flann had. “Shall we start at two?” “It would barely be worth the effort for two, but why not? That would be two more in my purse. But let’s see your coin first.” His grin turned smug.

Mad and Max are on their In-N-Out burger run, when who do they see? Jane, Max's VP of Finance that Mad and Max have been uncovering her embezzling back at the office and Max plans for fire the next day.
Blue circuit board background Text: Mad & Max: A Silicon Valley Romance As Max’s car inched forward and passed by the outdoor seating area, he casually glanced at the array of diners enjoying their food. “Oh, you gotta be kidding me,” Max breathed. “Shit, duck!” he hissed urgently while leaning across Madison’s lap to grab the seat lever to drop her seat back. “It’s Jane!” Catching onto what Max was suggesting, Madison grabbed the seat back lever and yanked it, falling backwards, trying to get the seat as flat as possible. Spying a black hoodie laying idly on the backseat, she threw it over her head and upper body, trying to hide her red blouse, attempting to blend in with the car’s dark granite gray upholstery, thankful her skirt and shoes were black. At least her hair was still pinned up and confined. Peeking out from the edge of the hoodie, she saw Max hold up a hand and try and partially shield his face from being seen.
