I applaud DC's move to join the lawsuit to stop the withholding of SNAP benefits during the shutdown.

USDA has billions in contingency funds to spend on food assistance. A moral society does not let children go hungry because Congress can't get along.
NEW: We just filed a lawsuit alongside 25 states to restore SNAP food assistance during the federal shutdown.

141,000 DC residents rely on SNAP to afford their meals — including 47,000 children and 24,000 seniors.

We will do everything in our power to prevent DC families from going hungry.
To highlight that DC is prepared for #DCStatehood, I introduced a bill to change the title of the DC Mayor to Governor, the DC Council to Legislative Assembly, Councilmembers to Representatives, and the DC Council Chair to Speaker.
The Trump Admin's reinstallation of the statue of Confederate Albert Pike is an affront to DC residents.

Pike took up arms against the US, misappropriated funds, and was captured by his own troops. He has no claim to be memorialized in the nation's capital.
Fun fact: Most members of Congress and their staff get their health insurance via DC Health Link.

If the health tax credits aren’t extended, their health insurance costs will go up, like millions of other people around the country.

An extension is in everyone’s best interest.
The GOP's keeping the gov't closed because they won’t vote for a CR that extends tax credits which make healthcare affordable. Without an extension, premiums will skyrocket to a level many simply can’t afford to pay.

I won’t support a CR that will lead to millions losing healthcare.
Millions of Americans risk losing their healthcare while President Trump is selling donors a chance to have their names etched into the White House during construction of a $200m ballroom.

I signed onto Rep. Takano's bills to ensure the White House isn't for sale.
Americans go without paychecks, Trump’s turning the White House into his pet construction project.
As one of the largest advertisers in the US, the federal government must ensure fair access for small disadvantaged businesses and those owned by minorities and women.

I introduced a bill to require agencies to report the amount they spend on these contracts in their annual budget justifications.
My daughter Katherine has Down syndrome, so President Trump's layoff of employees dedicated to supporting students with disabilities and their families is personal.

I joined Rep. Lucy McBath to urge the administration to rescind the termination notices sent to these employees.

For the Epstein-th time, Oversight Dems are demanding no pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell. Release the files!
Pres. Trump signed a law entitling fed workers to backpay after shutdowns, yet his admin removed critical guidance explicitly stating that these employees will be paid when the shutdown ends.

I joined a letter led by Sen. Kaine asking OMB to affirm that furloughed employees will receive backpay.
GAO has authority to conduct investigations and audits of federal agencies, but its authorizing statute incorrectly defines DC as a federal agency.

DC already has a local auditor and IG, so GAO's authority over DC is redundant and offensive. I introduced a bill to repeal it.
Millions of federal employees, servicemembers and contractors face pay interruptions during the gov shutdown.

I joined a letter to regulatory agencies asking for immediate guidance encouraging financial institutions to offer flexible financial arrangements for these Americans.
The land we walk on carries the history of Indigenous peoples who have lived here since time immemorial.

Their stories, struggles, and triumphs are deeply rooted in our shared history. Indigenous Peoples Day is a day to reflect on that deep connection and the path forward.
Shutdown Day 10: Ten days without a functioning government is ten days too many. Families who depend on government services shouldn’t be collateral damage for political brinkmanship.

Republicans may be relaxing at home, but my office is still open and working on behalf of DC residents.
DC shouldn't be penalized for Congress' disfunction, but many of DC's strictly local land use decisions are delayed during shutdowns because the Nat'l Cap Planning Commission and Commission of Fine Arts are federal agencies.

I introduced a bill to exempt them from shutdowns.
Shutdown Day 9: Every additional day of this shutdown deepens uncertainty for federal workers, contractors, and the entire economy. It must end.

My office is still open and working on behalf of DC residents.
Federal contractors bear no responsibility for government shutdowns, but ultimately they pay the price.

I'm co-leading a bill with Rep. Pressley to ensure these critical workers receive backpay for this shutdown.
Government shutdowns are destabilizing events with devastating consequences, especially for low-wage service workers.

Republicans shut down the government, so @smith.senate.gov & I are introducing a bill to ensure federal contractors receive back pay when the government reopens.
Shutdown Day 8: The Republican shutdown jeopardizes housing assistance, food aid, and health programs that Americans depend on. Working families shouldn’t pay the cost of Congress’s dysfunction.

Republicans have left town, but my office is still open and working on behalf of DC residents.
Today marks two years since the October 7th massacre, where 1,200 people were murdered and 250 were kidnapped.

Since then, Hamas has held Israelis hostage while scores of innocent Palestinians have died.

Now is the time to bring aid to Gaza, end the war and release the hostages.
Shutdown Day 7: Beginning next week, National parks, museums, and cultural institutions in DC will be shuttered, depriving residents and visitors of cultural experiences that make DC special.

While Republicans relax at home, my office remains open and working for DC residents.
Shutdown Day 6: Small businesses in DC that depend on business from federal employees are losing income every day this shutdown drags on. The economic damage is spreading.

House Republicans may have left town, but my office is still open and working on behalf of DC residents.
States and territories have full control over their criminal justice systems. DC deserves the same, but currently only the president can grant clemency for DC crimes.

I introduced a bill to give the DC mayor the authority to grant clemency in these cases.
Shutdown Day 3: Republicans refuse to end the health care crisis they started, so federal workers are working without pay — or they're barred from working at all.

This shutdown is reckless and harmful to DC.

My office is still open and working on behalf of DC residents.
Shutdown Day 2: After months of making life harder and more expensive, President Trump and Republicans have shut down the government—because they refuse to protect Americans’ health care.

My office is still open and working for DC residents.
