USAID has long been a character in 'Gimme Shelter'. USAID has been almost everywhere I've been before I arrived and after I left, a prominent reminder of the humanitarian spirit of the United States. It is devastating to see the organization dismantled and disrespected.

USAID has long been a character in 'Gimme Shelter'. USAID has been almost everywhere I've been before I arrived and after I left, a prominent reminder of the humanitarian spirit of the United States. It is devastating to see the organization dismantled and disrespected.
This is one of the first things I look for during regime change - the UN provides a range of services for countries in need, and whether a new regime opts in or out of that support speaks volumes about their priorities.
UN recognition can be tricky when a regime falls to armed opposition—but in Syria’s case, the nascent transitional government’s opted to keep Assad’s ambassador on to represent them in NYC, signaling they want diplomatic continuity, legitimacy, & the vital aid & relief that follows—Mark & I discuss:
