Thank you all for following me on this journey, however sad it may be. It is vital we remember these species and not repeat our past mistakes. (3/3)
It was first recorded in 1931 and, due to overhunting for food, introduction of predatory snakes to its environment, and other habitat changes, was declared extinct in the wild in 1976. (2/3)
#Pinktober2025 Day 31: #GuamFlyingFox
Finishing the #GoneTooSoon series is this #bat species native to the #Marianas Islands
Little was known about its reproductive habits, but after a female was shot & discovered accompanied by a juvenile, it is believed they practiced ongoing parental care. (1/2)
#Pinktober2025 Day 30: #MountGloriousDayFrog
This #frog was native to #Queensland and relied on wet environments to survive. It was first described in 1966, but due to habitat destruction, disease, and introduction of invasive flora and fauna, it was extinct by 1979.
Multiple factors contributed to its eventual extinction in 1939: habitat destruction, invasive predators, and overhunting for sport and its pelt. (2/2)
#Pinktober2025 Day 29: #ToolacheWallaby
This #wallaby lived in Southern #Australia and was described as graceful and elegant, with erratic movements that helped it elude predators. (1/2)
#Pinktober2025 Day 28: #WesternBlackRhinoceros
This species of #Rhinoceros was endemic to #Africa and was quite common for a time. Its horn was highly sought after for various purposes and poaching of the #rhino eventually led to it being completely wiped out. It was declared extinct in 2011.
Here's a recently completed commission for a streamer!Definitely had a blast working on this.

It was hunted to extinction and Martha, the last of its kind, died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914. The Passenger Pigeon is an example of #anthropogenicextinction (2/2)
#Pinktober2025 Day 27: #PassengerPigeon
This is one of the first creatures to introduce humanity to the concept of #extinction
It was a #pigeon that lived abundantly in #NorthAmerica and became a popular source of meat when Europeans colonized the land. (1/2)
#Pinktober2025 Day 26 (a day late): #JavanTiger
This #tiger lived on the island of #Java & was smaller than most other Asian tigers. Several factors contributed to its demise, including habitat loss, loss of prey species to disease & poisoning, & overhunting. It was declared extinct in 2008.
#Pinktober2025 Day 25: #SchomburgksDeer
This #deer species was endemic to #Thailand and lived in herds of one male, several females, and their young, in swampy plains. They went extinct in 1938 due to excessive hunting and habitat loss from the increase of rice trade.
#Pinktober2025 Day 24: #RoundIslandBurrowingBoa
This burrowing #boa is a species of #snake that inhabited the island of #Mauritius in an extremely small range of forested habitat. It was heavily persecuted by early settlers and its habitat destroyed, and eventually went extinct in the late 1900s.
There were thousands to millions when #Polynesians settled, & went extinct due to overhunting by 1445, along with their only other predator, the Haast's #Eagle, which relied on them for food. This again demonstrates the delicate balance of island ecosystems & how badly humans can affect them. (2/2)
#Pinktiber2025 Day 23: #Moa
The Moa was a flightless #bird that inhabited the islands of #NewZealand
There were 9 different species of Moa that ranged from the size of a turkey to about 12ft tall. (1/2)
I'm all ready to go this weekend and @lugcon.bsky.social !

#Pinktober2025 Day 22: #SicilianWolf
This was a small #wolf species with pale fur endemic to #Sicily that was the subject of many superstitions and was hunted to extinction in the 1900s. There is only one photograph in existence of a live specimen.
#Pinktober2025 Day 21: #StellersSeaCow
This relative of the #dugong was massive, growing up to 30ft in length, weighing up to 10t, & covered in a thick layer of blubber to survive frigid waters. It was hunted for its meat, fat, & hide, & went extinct in 1768, less than 30 years after its discovery.
For sure! And it gave hunters a run for their money too. They had to come up with diabolical methods to capture them. So sad they were wiped out. 😭
