Last summer while doing surveys in Glacier NP we found PLASTIC HAIRBRUSH BRISTLES in a pika haypile in a remote part of the park. Why?? How?? We don’t know. So of course we speculated about it in a short natural history note.

We think this has important implications for bird conservation and management. Optimal fire management to maximize benefits to birds is going to look different across geographies. Our work takes a step toward understanding these complexities!

Which results in these incredibly insightful visualizations showing how bird-fire relationships vary spatially in their magnitude and, sometimes, direction (see the goshawk!!). This shows us that the effect of fire in one part of a species range might be completely different in another. Wowowowow

To do this we looked at how different axes of fire regime (time since fire, fire frequency, fire severity) related to eBird relative abundance across space-time windows (“stixels”). Here’s an example showing how much relationships can vary spatially. We did this many times to make ensemble maps
