Listeners of KQED may have noticed the subtle change, but it was actually a massive one. If you're at a public radio station, think deeply about how you present your station to the community. Here was our process and how you could rebrand on-air: www.radioworld.com/columns-...

Too many leaders' exits feel like terminations, not transitions. Boards: this is your moment to reinforce culture, clarity and continuity. Succession isn’t just a handoff. Instead it’s a strategic reset.

Curiosity is a competitive edge. Ask why your audience trusts you, where you fall short and what they wish you would cover next.

Coming home to Texas next month. If you're a media sort, I'd love to catch coffee in Austin. Drop a note and let's say hey.

A difficult boss up top can shake a whole org, but middle leaders aren’t powerless. Tip? Align on what matters, build clear agreements, and use external validation to influence up. Leadership from the middle isn’t easy, but it’s powerful.

Advice I often give to rising leaders: Don’t chase platforms. Chase problems. Find one recurring pain in your shop and own the fix. Build a tiny dashboard, write the SOP, or train the team. Then share results. Executives notice people who reduce friction and raise quality.

I'm hosting a limited-run podcast in 2026.

With historical documents, interviews and more, you'll get a closeup look at a true story. A group unlike anything the world had ever seen, transformed into what no one could have predicted. Details upcoming. Advice welcome.

Culture doesn’t trickle down. It’s built, one choice at a time.

When an org feels unstable, model good behavior, and stay close. People might not stay for the company, but they’ll stay for leaders who’ve got their backs. Are you that person?

Fear thrives in uncertainty, but it’s the pace of today’s change that paralyzes leaders. Policy shifts go viral before they go official. AI questions are existential. The map is breaking into blocs.

While there's a lot we can’t predict, we can plan and think wisely.

Is "push/ed/ing back" the most overused (and lazy) phrase in journalism? 🤔

Outing myself as someone who's trying to not use it when precise words are clearer, but curious.

When strategy changes, don’t just share the “why.” Show the “how.” Break it into tasks. Tie it to personal goals. And always listen. Pushback isn’t resistance, it’s insight.

Real change starts with clarity, empathy and trust.

A major public media challenge now is how search is shifting from queries to conversations. Your programming notes should be thus structured for Q&A.

Future-proof discovery by turning your best explainers into short answer posts, then into an audio Q&A file. Tag and index too.

Hybrid work isn’t just a policy. It’s a new system. But success demands structure, including clear norms and expectations and metrics that reflect how work really gets done.
