"Was the First Order itself not built on indentured labor under the past Supreme Leader, ah—Snoke, was it?” one of the other two Neimoidian directors offer. The rich food in her stomach roils sickeningly. She’s forced herself to ignore many unpleasant aspects of him lately—but if that’s a practice he’s kept— “Yes,” says Kylo, low, “but I am leading differently, as my presence here shows. Slavery may be profitable, but it inspires little loyalty. It invites uprisings and stokes rebellious sentiments. The cost of surveillance and troops to quash these things outweighs the credits saved.” He casts a disparaging glance around the table. “Many beings on backwater planets are grateful to be paid a pittance. Let them have it.” And even at that, some of the tension drains from Rey’s body. But Lorvane waves a long-fingered green hand, showing the conversation is far from over. “There are ways to lessen those difficulties. Block all forms of communication with the larger galaxy. Better yet, raise them from birth, as we do—it’s much more effective when the next generations have no recollection of freedom’s sweetness.” She feels a storm coming, just like when the clouds gathered and the air became thick and electric on Jakku. It brews in the bond and in the Force around them, although Kylo’s face remains stony. “Of your many great attributes we’ve heard about, Kylo Ren, a soft heart for the galaxy’s paupers wasn’t among them.” Halrix’s cheeks are ruddy, his silver brow turned gold by the dancing light. Hux sips from his glass, looking pointedly at Rey. “He does seem to care about one.” Swallowing her own rush of anger that mingles with that already in the red-hot bond, she hears Lorvane say with diplomatic care, “We would be more than willing to refer you to our best external sources, Supreme Leader. You understand, of course, that we cannot give up our own. We have many contacts on Zygerria, and some on Kashyyk and Tatooine—” “He shames us for our indentured servants,” Halrix remarks to Pryde, “but in practice, how different is it to a kidnapped war bride?” A violent crack rends the air, so loud it makes Rey jump.

And this—I’ve never tasted anything like this before. I didn’t know it was possible for food to taste like this,” she half-chokes, swallowing a sudden surge of emotion with her next bite. Picking up the spongy slice of cake with her fingers, she tears a piece off. “You’re trying this. I’m not letting you escape this time.” She brandishes it at him like a weapon, putting her other hand faux-seriously on the hilt of her own. “I’ll pin you down and make you taste something sweet for once in your miserable life, Sithspawn.” Kylo’s eyes grow too dark for the bright morning. “You say that like it’s a threat.” “Maybe it is,” she parries, the tightness of his voice coiling her insides. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep, scavenger.” Rey doesn’t know if it’s the sunlight or his implicit invitation, but suddenly she’s brave. “Close your eyes.” His mouth tenses at that; his fingers grip the sides of his mug. “You asked if you can trust me, yesterday,” she murmurs, and thinks she can feel every nerve in her body awaken. “Let’s find out.” It makes him only slightly more vulnerable—she knows he can sense her movements, that the Force would warn him of any real threat in her intentions. He knows it too, and she wonders if it’s the only reason he humors her. His eyelids lower after one last, indecipherable look at her; his eyelashes are black smudges above his pale cheeks. Rey stands swiftly and, before her conscience can flare, straddles his lap, wedging her knees against his chair’s spiraling armrests.
