There in his mind it was so clear, almost like he was in the moment again... “You can’t invite a woman over, keep her up all night, and then not have snacks. It’s inhumane! Illegal, probably.” Her nose wrinkled as she delivered the accusation, but her grin betrayed her. Ben’s lips curved, slow and helpless. Something about the whole situation was ridiculous, her in his clothes, tearing apart his kitchen like it belonged to her. And yet the sight lodged deep inside him, like an anchor. He realized, standing there in the dim light of his kitchen, that he wanted her. Just Rey. In his shirt. In his home. In his life. For as long as he could have her.

Rey holding Ben’s face right before she kisses him. In the bottom left corner are two small dark heart shapes and one bright one. And when the war at last ended, he’d died but twice. Once in battle—a blast of radiance so powerful it stopped his heart—and once in the course of his master’s training. It was not a waste, the Lord of Darkness had told him, so long as he had learned something. He’d been spared twice over, too: first by the Light’s paragon, and then at the trials, where the Sith Lord’s manipulations had come to light—a pun too apt to avoid—and he’d been shockingly and undeservingly pardoned. Sentenced only to relocate to a small, disgustingly welcoming village, and live “a peaceful life.” Whatever that meant. But sometimes he feels like the Sith blessing spell had been half-sham; like he’d come back wrong anyway, warped by each brush with the grave. He can’t remember the man he was before—though perhaps that’s because he was barely more than a boy when he joined the Sith Lord’s army, swayed by the promise of becoming who he was meant to be. The irony, in retrospect, is more painful than his scars.

Better than,” Kylo grits out. He turns to her, eyes blazing. “You certainly didn’t seem prepared to do anything about it.” “I—you—” For seconds, Rey is so incandescent she can’t form a coherent thought. Throat tight and fists clenched, she burns at the ignorance of his accusation. “You think I wasn’t sickened by it? I was! It was vile! But I—the actual subject of the his thoughts—was able to ignore them and focus on getting the information we needed! He so obviously did it to distract us—you! You played right into their hands, again!” There’s barely an inch between them when she finishes. She’s shaking, too, with shock and adrenaline and the harsh reminder of her bondmate’s cruelty that lingers in the satisfied twist of his lips. “No one is permitted to think that way about you, Rey,” Kylo says in his softest, most dangerous tone. His breath is a hot kiss on her mouth, every syllable laced with threat. His fingers flex toward her. Rey jerks back. “Except for you, right?
