Is the point of mathematical research to know *what* is true or to know *why* it's true? Emily Riehl lays out a strong argument - and what it has to do with AI - along great advice for the field in @science.org

While this usually isn't the intent, "no one will ever be held accountable for this" doomerism is an excuse not to try.

There'll be at least some accountability if enough Americans work for it. And this time really is different. Doesn't guarantee the aftermath will be, but it increases the chances.

Update: they've passed the 100 hour/lap mark (416 miles) and seven runners are still in it. Phil Gore set the current record (119 laps) - looks like the record might go down. He's one of the seven.

This insightful thread covers physics - but really it's about any valuable learning:

The point was never specific facts, computations or procedures. It's always been about teaching the brain new ways of thinking.

And in the age of AI this point is more important than ever.
A failing that physics faculty and physics students seem to be mutually complicit in is understanding that physics classes are often not really about learning the specific topic but rather are about the way learning the specific topic teaches you methods, including thinking methods

It's not hard to run/walk 4.1667 miles in an hour - a bit faster than a 15 min/mile pace. How about doing it a few hours in a row? Get to 24 hours and you've gone 100 miles.

Backyard Ultra competitors are 63 hours in - and half the field is still going! Amazing.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.
