In honor of #SickleCellAwareness Month, I want to highlight this paper in JAMA Peds: the faster children w/acute SCD pain receive opioids in the ED, the more likely they are to be discharged home. Dose 1 in <1 hr + dose 2 <30 min later = ~40% lower odds of admission!

Opioid Timeliness in the Emergency Department and Hospitalizations for Acute Sickle Cell Pain
This cross-sectional study investigates if timely administration of opioids in the emergency department is associated with hospitalization for sickle cell disease pain.

Despite obstacles, continuing important #globalhhealth research in #SickleCellDisease increases our knowledge for Americans and the global community. Working for the greater good is basically the whole point 🩸🌍💊

Does anyone out there have any recommendations on a good course for the mandatory 8 hour DEA training for license renewal? Ideally a course that will help me to take better care of people in pain #meded #chronicpain #sicklecell
One step forward, no steps backwards

Now more than ever, we need good institutional and interpersonal leadership to avoid back sliding for #sicklecellwarriors and equitable care for all patients

This is a pep talk to myself as much as to the rest of us

Take care of my family, friends, patients, and colleagues. Focusing on my microcosm

I'd also like to ensure my spending is going towards companies I agree with, so open to any lists/suggestions

I’ve cared for infants who stopped breathing w/ pertussis.

School aged kids who died of flu or COVID.

And many of my patients can’t be vaccinated because they’re on chemotherapy or are immune compromised.

Vaccinations save lives of those who get them & those who cannot.

It’s that simple.
Oh no! Do you need help wrapping it?? (Learned over many years as a gymnast and then gymnastics coach)

☀️ Awaken your inner poet and write your best haiku about #ASH24 or #hematology! That's 3 lines in a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.

Post now through Tuesday afternoon and include #ASHaiku. You might get included in a highlights post!

🛑Remember, there's only one H in #ASHaiku!

This is great! Hopefully will be like the early days of med twitter where people would share their work and have exciting discussions in the comments. Let's go #medsky #hemesky

CMS is considering the adoption of ASH’s quality measure assessing timely pain treatment in the ED for patients w/ #SickleCell. Comment to support inclusion in the Hospital Outpatient & Rural Emergency Hospital Quality Reporting Programs.

When high schoolers and college kids reach out, I say medicine is incredibly rewarding and a lot of work.

I also make sure they know there are many ways to work in the medical field besides doctor and nurse. A lot of people don't know about other jobs like PA, therapists, pharmacists, etc.
3rd principle #Kwanzaa: Ujima, we take care of our own

Grateful that our amazing community of leaders has decided to raise money and collect coats for our #sicklecellwarriors this year! 🙏🏽
Thank you! So glad to see you here. I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving and are staying warm!!!
So important! I was nominated to join the #sicklecell committee, asking a similar question. I'm very interested to see what the NASEM process will be like and looking forward to contributing fairly and advocating for our warriors. I'll look out for your posts!
I haven't deleted yet... lingering.

You were one of the first accounts I interacted with when I first joined at the end of residency!! Glad we can reconnect here
