His circuit is discussed in my repo for the new instrument.

Have you read it?

Anyway, the main point is about reproducibility.

I could use some help getting the news out.
This is also a challenge to all of the linear CCD projects, and for any commercial instrument you use:

Before you acquire and/or use any spectrometer for work you plan to publish, you should insist on seeing a fluorescent lamp spectrum and linearity data in graphical form as shown in the repo below
For any CCD spectrometer you see anywhere, if they have not posted a fluorescent light specrum, dont touch it.

And if they did post the spectrum, take a look at the strong sharp lines.

If the ratios of heights in nearby peaks is off, then assume that the instrument has an electrical problem.
Read the repo readme. Look at the graphs.

Everybody who has used these, has noticed this - since they first appeared in the '90s

I happen to be an instrumentation physicist, I decided enough is enough and invested some effort and post one that really works.
No, they are not viable.

There is a huge difference between getting a signal and getting a spectrum that is reproducible.

I am working on a few.

We are calling our project Open Instruments for Open Science.

Here are two examples. A third design, photon tagging is ready for build and we are updating a few more to add to the repos.

No, it was a stunning failure of basic academic standards.

Taking a position, in public no less, based on biased, unvetted and in some instances debunked data, *should* be grounds for termination for faculty.

That students do it en masse, with faculty support, all the more so.
And they are, obviously.
