Delighted to share an exclusive piece by @drmabibby.bsky.social for patrons only.

It hones in on Newcastle in 1644 - one of the most dramatic years in the city’s history, from the view of Scottish writer William Lithgow who was present at the siege.

Morning!

The Black Bull and its historic lowping stone has been added to the site as its own entry, alongside a dozens of other pubs in the region. This one has been here since at least the 1840s, and perhaps a private dwelling prior.

Not quite as good, but Welsh uses coblyn ("goblin") as an intensifying expletive:

Mae'n goblyn o beth "it's a hell of a thing"
Mynd fel y coblyn "go like the clappers"
Be goblyn?! "What the hell?!"
Goblyn o ddim byd "f*ck all"
TIL that in Irish you can use the word 'demon' as a negative quantifier and it's called "demonic negation" (McCloskey 2009), e.g.
Dheamhan duine a bhuaileann sé.
demon person that hits he
'Not one person does he hit.'

Congratulations Dr Jordana, and very well deserved!
I had high hopes of something being found from ancient Egypt when I was researching horses there, given the large quantities of material - sadly nothing that I know of (yet).
I can't see the post for some reason. What is it about?

Finally got a chance to check these out from the library ✨🐎 An amazing collection by @drmabibby.bsky.social
Glad you enjoyed them Marieke!
Yes. This.
Positive folklore. The swallows & house martins have arrived & the swifts are on their way. Up until the mid-20thC, they were amongst the few birds whose nests were considered lucky. Even hardened farmers worried about losing them. Time to get that sentiment back.
Go Cockie.
Again, birds have a lot to teach us.

Still in March: Triumph of Minerva upper registers of the month. Painted for Borso d'Este in Ferrara's Palazzo Schifanoia,1469, by Francesco del Cossa. Today is his day.
I gave a talk at the Fell Pony Society today. Now I'm enjoying the evening with a McEwan's Export, some pictorial Fell ponies, and some real ones in the field behind. Cheers.
Ooh, these stamps look good.
Black Shuck (and Blythborough church) on a stamp!
It's an awful feeling, isn't it.
