Men’s and boys’ health is something I’ve been working on since I was first elected.

As I say here, men’s and women’s health is an “and” issue, not an “or” issue.
Brilliant to see the recently renovated classroom thanks to proceeds from generous donations at the Congerstone Summer Ball - well done to all involved.

And a special thanks to the pupils for their many varied and wonderful questions!

Last week I visited Congerstone Primary School to meet Miss Lawton, the new Headteacher, and Mrs Smith, the Chair of Governors 🏫

It was a pleasure to stop by each class to see what the pupils were working on.

Last night I asked the Security Minister a simple question: does he believe China has spied, or is spying, on Parliament?

The mist lifted just enough to join Oakthorpe Donisthorpe & Acresford Parish Council for their hugely successful #AppleDay in the orchard.

Loads of people from all ages enjoying all that apples have to offer! Well done to the community for a great event.
Honoured to pick out the raffle tickets and congratulations to the many winners, but even more so to the organisers and gift donors - I believe over £2000 has already been raised!

Great work!

A huge well done to Kirkby Mallory Schoolroom with their Microfest for #octoberfest - a brilliant event for the entire village with beer, sausages, music and entertainment.

Rounded off Tuesday with a Youth Sport Trust panel discussion on how we can encourage younger people into sports and the importance of community facilities in achieving this.

It was good to touch on the health benefits, including to our mental wellbeing, of being active.

Thank you to @fullfact.org and @shoutoutuk.bsky.social for inviting me to take part in the ‘Future Focus’ panel.

It was a wide-ranging discussion on everything from social media and misinformation, to votes at 16, housing, the triple lock and even cats 🐈

We know social care is so important.

Tuesday morning’s discussion focused on how to best serve families and Local Authorities with provision while managing spiralling costs.

As you might expect, lots of questions around the Casey review, which is expected in 2028.

Thank you to Re:State for chairing a roundtable with Community Pharmacy England to hear from stakeholders from across primary care: from dentistry to optometry, pharmacy to the charity sector and all primary care organisations in between!

Then onto a really insightful discussion with @smfthinktank.bsky.social about how to end health inequalities across the UK, not forgetting rural areas like Hinckley and Bosworth!

Monday started with a discussion on the issues impacting men and boys 👥

We talked about everything from steroids and social media to the role of men in modern society and what a ‘good man’ looks like.

Well, that’s a wrap!

An intense four days at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester.

From bold ideas to big debates — here's a little flavour of what I got up to 👇

As a doctor, people have asked me about news stories on pregnant women taking paracetamol.

So here's an explainer on everything from the known risks of untreated pain or fever in pregnancy, to the study in Sweden of 2.4m people and the important distinction between causation and correlation.

(2/4)
The evidence we have to date says *paracetamol does not cause autism* and, what’s more, we have concrete evidence of the dangers of not taking paracetamol when it is needed.

Since my appearance on #BBCQT last week, which shortly followed news that the Government had plans to introduce mandatory digital ID cards, I’ve been asked for my views.

To be clear: I am against mandatory digital ID.

Here’s why 👇

⁉️ What happens next?

Suffice to say, Govt appears to have backed itself into a corner.

The economy isn’t growing, the Chancellor has made promises not to increase borrowing or raise taxes, and the Prime Minister may not be in a position to pass legislation on spending cuts.
Why is this relevant now? It raises questions about the Government’s ability to pass measures which may be unpopular with some of its MPs, such as cutting public spending.
However, as you may recall, there was concern from across the House about the impact of the proposed changes. In the end, the Government U-turned and decided to remove the controversial proposals.
If she’s sticking to her promises not to increase borrowing or raise taxes, and the economy is not growing, the remaining option is to cut spending...

Earlier this year, the Government attempted to pass legislation which would have reduced the welfare bill by £5bn.
