@[email protected] @[email protected] I suspect it’s about removing friction. If you have to wait for an account, a lot of people will just go to BlueSky or whatever instead. The worst people, who are here just to harass other people, will just start the process on a hundred instances and start with a few innocuous posts once they’re approved, then go full Nazi. So requiring approval has a problem. It’s worth remembering that a lot of successful systems (gmail and Facebook being two notable examples) managed to achieve rapid growth by enforcing artificial scarcity. Gmail was invite only! I wonder if this would work for the Fediverse, with individuals given one invite for every month they are here with no reports to moderators. I posted in the other thread that the alternative would be to allow open registration but with limited rights until you’ve shown you can b behave. For example: - No direct messages. - All replies go to a moderator first. And, if you are flagged, you keep something that looks like an account, but no one sees your posts, so it takes a while to realise you aren’t actually harassing anyone, you’re just sending abuse to /dev/null.
