I’ve had a fabulous weekend in Barcelona with lots of art, architecture and Catalan culture. Plenty of shopping, tapas and cocktails too!

I was 19 when I visited Barcelona for the first time, as a student, and it was here that I discovered the work of Miró, Picasso and Dalí. I’ve loved modern art ever since and it was fantastic to revisit the Fundació Joan Miró again today, 39 years later.

This afternoon I climbed up to the Castell de Montjuïc in Barcelona, where I came across the dungeon in which Spanish anarchist Santiago Salvador Franch was imprisoned after his deadly bomb attack on the Gran Teatre del Liceu in 1893. By the door there is a picture of him in his cell.

It has been a day of two cathedrals. Barcelona Cathedral this morning and La Sagrada Família this afternoon. Both very different but both magnificent with such awe-inspiring architecture.

I’m in Barcelona for a few days and this evening I walked past the Gran Teatre del Liceu on La Rambla which, in 1893, was bombed by anarchist Santiago Salvador Franch, killing some 20 people and injuring many others. He was executed for the deadly attack.

While I was in Lancaster last week visiting my son, I went to the Old Pier Bookshop in Morecambe for the first time. It is an amazing place stuffed full of thousands of books on labyrinthine shelving. I picked up some true crime books to add to my collection.

🔍This morning I enjoyed a fascinating tour of the 150 Years of the Crime Museum exhibition, at the Metropolitan Police Museum. There were lots of interesting artefacts from historical crime cases to show how detection and forensic science have been used to solve crime over the decades. A must see!

🎃 My favourite spooky crime-related object is the hand of glory, which was made from the dried hand of a hanged criminal and used as a magic tool by thieves to enter a property by rendering the occupants immobile. It could also unlock doors. This one is from the Whitby Museum. Happy Halloween!
