I got to where I was comfortable standing, watching skunks forage around lawns. Their eyesight, I think, isn’t good, so they might not notice you. Before they spray the tail goes up, they do a little dance. Only a dog could fail to take the hint. They don’t want to spray; that stuff is expensive.

adult skunks are really reluctant to spray and give you plenty of warning. Baby skunks, on the other hand, are cute but crazy trigger-happy and will not hesitate to test their equipment 😂

There were a couple of summers when there was some kind of population explosion of skunks in Rogers Park, where I was living. Dogs set them off nightly and I never took an evening walk without seeing them. Once I came out of an apartment building and did literally trip over one, which just ran off…
