I think the main problem with the Subway Slammer is that they gave him a melodramatic backstory that turned him misogynist, if he had just been a dumb asshole roughousing for fun they could later bring him back as a good guy who helps the heroes slam through a crowded area to reach the main villain

Reading up on IDW Sonic is reinforcing my belief that Ian Flynn's strength as a writer is in taking stupid continuity bullshit and savaging it into legitimately cool and interesting stories and SEGA's attempts to lock down what material Sonic media is allowed to use actively impedes his strengths
