Haven't gotten less racist they've just become emboldened. I think both may be a bit true. Lots of racists became emboldened and that built an environment that inspired racists to become more racist.

Instead of just openly saying Klan shit. I think that is where the disconnect is. The right has pushed hard to the right and is more openly racist however leftists and some moderates have shifted over time to become less racist. This deserves a lot of caveats and it's fair to say a lot of them 2

So this is how I read it based on my experience. So a lot of folks (my parents being one) didn't talk politics with their kids. Some may have wanted their kids to come to their own conclusions. Overall the times were more racist. Cons and moderates however used to be more tied to using dog whistles1
