I'm not sure if this is an American thing, because about twenty five years ago I went to a McDonald's in Berlin, forgot the German phrase for fries, so asked for potatoes. The kid at the counter had no idea what item potatoes could be in their menu

Whereas I grew up in a city where the archeological evidence suggests there has been a relatively major settlement there since 6th Millenium BCE. Definitely sort of the opposite end of the spectrum 😅
