It could, but with the root’s size you’d do disproportionate damage to the maple. Which might be ok except in this situation that ash tree is probably already doomed due to emerald ash borers (unless it’s being treated), so you might as well let the maple be.

If you know Suzanne Simard’s work, you’re familiar with the idea of trees “helping” each other and sharing resources through their root systems, but here’s a maple giving a big fuck you to its neighbor.

The ash is clearly older than the maple, but it looks to me like the maple root went completely out of its way to encircle the ash trunk, grow disproportionately large, and strangle it.

I see these all the time, and they usually result from either bad nursery stock (especially with container grown trees) or from buried root flares (don’t plant too deep, and no mulch vomcanoes!). If you see these on your tree, fix them if it’s not too late.

One common defect in urban trees are stem-girdling roots, where, rather than growing outwards, a root will wrap around its own trunk, limiting growth and nutrient flow, and eventually destabilizing the entire tree.

A place opened near me a few years back that served only pickle sandwiches like this. It tasted pretty good, but it was extremely messy and unpleasant to eat. The slipperiness between the pickle and the meat really causes problems and made you appreciate the high coefficient of friction of bread

In a perfect world, school quality isn’t tied to wealth. That being said, it’s insane to me that in a state where most of the pop is split across two of the wealthiest metros in the wealthiest country in the world, schools are perennially dealing with various fiscal crises
