Phil laughed. "Okay. I'll be nice." She thought quietly for a minute, then, softly, said: "Ask me anything about chemistry, physics." Her tone of voice signalled a sense of importance, deliberation. Clearly, Phil considered this topic an honourable thing.

Dan considered what could elicit the weightiest answer. "Do you think… could there be life on Mars?" Phil laid back down, and was quiet a while. For a moment, Dan thought she'd made a faux-pas — that Phil had taken it as an insult, considered it ludicrous to contemplate.

But she smiled, traced her fingers over Dan's thigh. She engaged genuinely. "Well, we know there was water up there. A lot of it, actually. We know there's organic matter — that doesn't really mean what it sounds like, it's just like, that means it's carbon-based — and actually, recently, we've found there's stuff about the rocks. I mean, there's things that have happened to the rocks. And those things, to us, our level of knowledge, it's difficult to explain how they could've happened without some kind of intervention."

Dan's eyes widened. "What do you mean, intervention? Fucking what? Aliens are real?"

Phil chuckled. "Well, scientists are always tentative. But you never know." She sighed deeply, like a weight had lifted. "I guess the real question is: If there was life on Mars… what happened to it? Maybe we used to not be alone, but they had to leave."

"Well, I guess we're unattached, then," Dan decided. "That's not all bad."
