On the forecast track, the center of Melissa isexpected to move near or over Jamaica through Tuesday, acrosssoutheastern Cuba Tuesday night, and across the southeasternBahamas on Wednesday. Satellite images indicate that maximum sustained winds have rapidlyincreased to near 140 mph (220 km/h) with higher gusts. Melissa isa category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.Continued rapid intensification is expected through tonight,followed by fluctuations in intensity. Melissa is expected to be amajor hurricane when making landfall in Jamaica Monday night orTuesday morning and southeastern Cuba late Tuesday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from thecenter and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles(280 km). RAINFALL: Melissa is expected to bring total rainfall of 15 to 30inches to portions of southern Hispaniola and Jamaica intoWednesday, with local maxima of 40 inches possible. Additionalheavy rainfall is likely beyond Wednesday; uncertainty at that timerange precludes exact storm totals. Catastrophic flash flooding andlandslides are probable across portions of southern Hispaniola andJamaica. Hurricane Melissa has now rapidly intensified into a category 4 hurricane and could reach category 5. The messaging from the NHC is not mincing words, especially with regard to Jamaica, which needs to seek shelter now.

Key Messages:

1. Jamaica: Seek shelter now(highlighted by the poster). Damaging winds and heavy rainfall
today and on Monday will cause catastrophic and life-threatening
flash flooding and numerous landslides before the strongest winds
arrive Monday night and Tuesday morning. Extensive infrastructural
damage, long-duration power and communication outages, and isolation
of communities are expected. Life-threatening storm surge is likely
along portions of the southern coast Monday night and Tuesday
morning.

2. Haiti: Catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding and
landslides are expected across southwestern Haiti through midweek,
likely causing extensive infrastructural damage and isolation
of communities. Although winds are temporarily decreasing on the
Tiburon peninsula, they could increase again across much of western
Haiti on Tuesday.

3. Dominican Republic: Heavy rainfall through midweek could produce
catastrophic flash flooding and numerous landslides in southern
portions of the country.

4. Eastern Cuba, Southeast Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos:
Monitor Melissa closely. There is an increasing risk of a
significant storm surge, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall by the
middle of the week. In eastern Cuba, the risk of life-threatening
flash flooding and landslides is increasing. A Hurricane Watch is in
effect for portions of eastern Cuba.

Kind of a big deal. We can now monitor and track air pollution by the hour. ESA Sentinel-4 can beam back hourly data on nitrogen dioxide hotspots & sulfur dioxide plumes. This is a massive leap for public health & air quality forecasting. See Northern Italy 😱

This image shows a vertical column of ozone. While ozone high up in the stratosphere plays a crucial role in shielding life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, ozone in the lower atmosphere acts as a pollutant, contributing to poor air quality and respiratory problems.

This image presents a vertical column density of sulphur dioxide. A distinct plume can be seen emerging from Mount Etna in Italy and drifting south-eastwards over the sea. Although Etna is currently relatively calm, much larger plumes are typically observed during periods of heightened volcanic activity.
