* entirely fair, am inclined to agree there -- will definitely be the last to defend isekai of sodor personally lmao -- its place absolutely fits, the thread's more just about finding out where the line ought to be drawn, since sodor needs the "real world" to contrast how it isn't real at all lol

I’m sharing a Palestinian account every day and today is Mohammed. Mohammed was finishing his studies to be a civil engineer in Rafah. His home and the small farm that him and his family had were destroyed. He’s now trying to survive with his large family, including many small children, in tents.

* that is why the isekai of sodor appeals to writers, because it is the easy way out for showing the differences in sodor
* sodor IS a world away from ours, i think accepting that is the first step of making a thomas story. we just need to figure out how to show there is in fact nothing like it

* that's why live-action thomas is concerning: look at the rich, vibrant world of sodor, it envokes a feeling that cannot be replicated with our own world, or merely stand alongside it

* you need to appreciate that sodor isn't real and what it stands for, to everyone in their universe and ours

* sodor's a fictional ideal we dream of, where things make sense and work out easily, where everyone is ensured to be safe and looked after, to be treated as family the moment you are simply kind to others

* what IS a "normal" thomas story, without the parts that make its fiction so compelling

* you need to illustrate what makes sodor beautiful: it is so blatantly unlike our world, it needs to feel so close yet so far out from our reach

* sodor's waywardness is natural to itself. when accidents happen, it's comical, and arguments happen every day, but are always resolved once everyone returns home

* but that's not how our world is. we're constantly fighting for mere respect. sodor, thematically, cannot be real

* the realness of sodor comes from its grounded nature of storytelling, its focus on a humble railway's life
* it does not come from its location, which takes such pride in welcoming diverse characters, and harmony in spite of mistakes, in a way we are fighting for but have not yet achieved

* sodor's whole existence is based in refusing to conform to reality's bleakness, bleakness that awdry witnessed happen and wrote into his stories (though not flawlessly. . . )

* i think it is important to stress, sodor being in the "real world" is not for realism: it is to CONTRAST our own world

* i get the real point, and most of us agree: that the thomas film should focus on thomas, not the humans crane-shunted in so the audience can relate to them.

* they want a story about thomas, and the engines are personified so you can tell human stories with them (i. e. the autistic lens). . .

* i think it illustrates a misunderstanding: sodor is a place that just cannot exist

I’m sharing a Palestinian account every day and today is Mahmoud. Mahmoud was a computer engineer doing web development before this. He’s lost his job and home (and many coworkers) and is in a tent with his family including his children Zeina, 6 and Zane, 2. His wife Malak is 7 months pregnant.
