Delta Chat
@delta.chat
Secure decentralized messaging across all major platforms. Instant and reliable via fast chatmail relays, compatible with classic email providers. Features chat-shared […]

#deltachat breaks the one app, one ID rule of phone-number-based apps by supporting multiple chat profiles. This allows for true private messaging where you can keep a public identity for the Web or Fediverse separate from a private one for family and friends. Managing multiple selves is a new […]

The total privacy of #deltachat has a trade-off: there is no global directory. Connecting for private messaging requires a direct QR scan or using an existing channel to exchange invite links. The hurdle is often the readiness of friends, family, or those around you to switch. However, once […]

While platforms like #matrix or #signal manage user identities on a server, #deltachat and #Chatmail are not platforms in the classic sense. They operate without a central registry, meaning there is no central gatekeeper to grant or deny access. This setup for private messaging naturally […]

The migration completed successfully, everything should be back to normal now.

PSA: The default relay server nine.testrun.org will be down for 15-30 minutes for another migration starting 11:00 CET.

We engage with decentralization protocols a lot (many nerds love to) but make no mistake: in the end, the app needs to work and be easy to use.
#deltachat is a cross-platform FOSS offering, with guaranteed security levels, close to user expectations ... major factors in driving adoption!

True […]

It took a while but it's shaping up nicely :) Post-Quantum Cryptography and Reliable Deletion, better known as Forward Secrecy, are going to become available in 2026 in #deltachat. For more details, including the recent #fosdem26 talk recording:

Autocrypt v2 - Post-Quantum and Reliable Deletion
Modern OpenPGP v6 certificate with post-quantum cryptography, reliable deletion, and transport-agnostic messaging for decentralized systems.

A lot of messaging systems try to reinvent the email system but many (signal, matrix, xmpp) took over one key traditional design which we actually dropped while retaining SMTP/IMAP compatibility: server-controlled identities.

With #chatmail user identities are cryptographic and reside on end […]

Our second #fosdem talk is about to start: Hocuri talks about the upcoming #multirelay profiles, which use more than one address to exchange messages!

Now in the #fosdem live stream: Holger Krekel introducing #autocrypt2, a mechanism to protect against store-now-decrypt-later attacks, to be introduced in Delta!

Several of our teams will be at #fosdem26 ... we'll introduce our PQC and Reliable Deletion ("forward secrecy") efforts, and give an overview over multi-relay #chatmail architectures. Or catch us on the booth or some sunny place outside :)

There are already more relays,
https://chatmail.at/relays lists some of them. This page is reachable through the "Use other server" option during profile creation. At the end of the page there is a link to https://chatmail.at/doc/relay/ with the documentation on setting […]

@keverets Tap Create new profile -> Use other server -> Use classic email as relay, there you can enter email credentials of your own server.

#deltachat does

- no bindings to public handles/numbers

- no address-book upload

- not do public contact or group discovery

- not have critical persistent server state (!)

Social identification is private, between people though ephemeral #p2p #e2ee messages.

Servers see messages with […]

PSA We are happy about the wealth of privacy focused classic email providers (proton, tutanota, posteo, mailbox.org etc) but they are not geared for instant secure messaging. Do yourself, family and friends a favor and use delta with any of the many https://chatmail.at/relays

Or setup a relay […]

Our stance simplified: we want to make private communications available to anyone on the planet.

Problem: governments everywhere tend to want to control and contain private communications. While Iran and Russia might be contemporary poster examples trying to control private communication […]

Don't believe those who loudly claim email can not avoid metadata! They are ignorant of our continuous works on minimizing metadata:

DONE:

- no phone number other identifying data needed
- no cleartext "Subject"
- no cleartext "To"
- randomized "Date"
- no IP addresses
- […]

@babble_endanger If you use only a single device, then messages are immediately removed after download. If you have multiple devices, messages stay longer so that all devices get a chance to get the messages. But all messages are still removed unconditionally after 20 days (configurable by relay […]
