For 2 years, 2 govts used a secret court to hide the truth: they put 100,000 Afghans at risk of death. They used constitutionally unprecedented methods to prevent reporting.
My reflections on two years on this story and why it must ever happen again.

My two years in secret court: How UK governments hid a national scandal
The government put 100,000 Afghans at risk of death. Then used the force of law in a constitutionally unprecedented way to prevent anyone finding out.

After jaw-jaw here comes war-war.

My entire professional life, as a journalist and an academic researcher, has been about war and its effects.
The tendency in the media to talk about devastating weapons as if they are toys and war as some kind of play is unfortunate. We should rise above that type of childishness.

For avoidance of misuse for political purposes, Semitic peoples include Jews Arabs, both Muslim and Christian Arabs. This definition is from Oxford Reference –

"A member of any of the peoples who speak or spoke a Semitic language, including in particular the Jews and Arabs."

A desperate politician resorts to this type of language or takes such risky steps, with disastrous results. Think of Theresa May and David Cameron in recent years - going back even Enoch Powell.
"I'm unhappy senior politicians are using language reminiscent of [Enoch] Powell and I'm sorry Starmer used some of those phrases."

Lord @alfdubs.bsky.social on the "regrettable" language used in the PM's 'island of strangers' speech.

Downing Street sources playing down what to expect from the supposed "full and comprehensive" trade deal with the UK announced by Trump.

Deal not yet agreed. This is just the general terms of an agreement which will need significant further negotiation before it can be ratified.

Who would have thought that after the collapse of the Soviet bloc about 35 years ago (1989-1991), the Western Alliance itself would be facing a crisis of existence?
Those of us who questioned the relevance of NATO then have plenty to think about, and consider what happened.

You’re telling me that right wing voters that Labour was trying to appeal to voted for a right wing party anyway and left wing voters decided not to vote for Labour because they’re too right wing now? Who could have possibly predicted this.

Trump’s intellectual problem or at least one of them is that he’s fixated on the US trade deficit with friend and foe. The deficit is a non-problem in economic terms & if there are trade issues with allies, they can be addressed with bilateral or multilateral trade deals
