Maybe it's dorky, but I'll introduce myself. I'm a nondisabled university professor who specializes in disability in ancient Greece. I approach this all through the lens of disability studies and critical disability theory, and advocate for disabled students in Classics and Archaeology.

It's not the real @angierasmussen.bsky.social writing to me as if we are friends

I love connecting with people on here 😂
Screenshot of message exchange with user whose display name is Angie Rasmussen, @angierasmussenn.bsky.social. They write, "Greetings." I respond, "Hey! How's it going?" followed by "Oh I see, you're a fake account" and they reply "How dare you"

I think we're talking past each other? It seemed like you were implying that it's because white people in the South are racist that they don't live as long, and I was pointing out that those states are very diverse and we shouldn't be so dismissive of the South as just havens for racist whites.

(I sometimes see my academic peers talking about things like annexing the South, etc., which is just such a problem given the history and also current state of the region, and that's the context in which I read your tweet.)

27 years ago, hateful violence took the life of Matthew Shepard. His story reminds us of what happens when intolerance goes unchecked.

Today, as extremists target our LGBTQ+ neighbors for who they are, we must recommit to building a nation rooted in love, safety, and equality for all.

It's a complicated history! But branding the South as just a bunch of white racists is definitely not right, you have to account for things like race and class, as well as the neglect of this region based on issues like race and class.
debscavator.bsky.social
The South is the most racially diverse region of the United States, and also contains some (most?) of the poorest counties in the country. It's frustrating to see those states written off as full of racist white people when the story is a lot more complicated than that?

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

I feel similarly: social media really changed my research (for the better) and introduced me to new networks and opened new professional doors. I'm ever grateful for the community I've experienced on social media.

social media opened a lot of professional doors for me - talks, invitations to submit things, getting my work out there, networking, etc.

it's also helped with social anxiety: when i meet one of my pocket friends IRL, it's easier to talk because it doesn't feel like a "cold call."

It’s a "crisis" when immigrants "take jobs away", but "innovation" when machines do. Funny.

Spend your energy on people who are disciplined, fired, arrested, even deported for exercising free speech in defense of victims. Spend it on defending our right to discuss topics like race and gender. Spend it on helping students, colleagues, and community members who are harmed by bad actors.

It's kind of like Roman Polanski's film about the Dreyfus affair. Probably it's just normal that Polanski is going so hard on someone who was wrongfully convicted.

There are loads of really great people who are also excellent scholars who struggle to find permanent jobs, publish their work, establish a platform, but we've gotta keep the pests around because...Classics.

I woke up to a review of a book published by a convicted felon in my field, and it's interesting to read that in the book, he attempts to depersonalize Cicero, to separate the man from the work. That's probably a neutral choice.
