The universal cry of the person who has been ignored or overlooked and means “I already told you this”, with a clear frustrated subtext of “Have you even bothered to read what I said?”

A great weapon used in arguments, which means “You’re completely wrong” and implies “I’m now going to tell you why.” This phrase is often wielded when respect for each other’s view is in short supply.

Perhaps one of the most direct polite-isms, it generally means “I’m furious/What are you trying to say?/Did I hear you right?”. With the emphasis on ‘beg’, it is an unusually clear indication of annoyance.

Tea should be poured into the cup first and any milk, lemon or honey added afterwards. In Victorian times hot tea was poured straight into the cup to test the quality of the bone china. Expensive china did not crack.

If serving tea for a group, it is worth brewing a pot. Loose leaf tea will taste best but will need to be poured through a tea strainer. A second pot with hot water in it should be provided to dilute over-brewed tea if necessary.

Traditionally men stood up when women came into the room, and younger people stood up for their elders. A courteous acknowledgement of the new arrival, nowadays it is considerate to stand up regardless of age and gender.
