That’s insane. It’s the main route into San Diego County from Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

Also, having grown up near there, war games cause windows to shake which is so irritating.

Today was my eighth and final day of serving on a jury at the criminal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles. One benefit of jury service was getting to enjoy various parks, restaurants, and coffee shops.

Today I found a new gem called café Persona, which is behind Walt Disney Concert Hall!

I’ve never celebrated Columbus Day, but my dad made sure I knew about Giuseppe Garibaldi’s role in unifying Italy. By the way, the historic meeting of Garibaldi with Victor Emanuel II happened in the commune of Teano where my great grandfather La Torre was born.

It was an NSF funded project called Mobilize where we had math and science teachers integrate computational thinking into their lessons. Students also got to be citizen scientists, collecting data on apps and then analyzing their class data sets.

I love when Rich is at the super computer checking his calculations.

It makes me think of Boelter Hall at UCLA where the Internet started. I used to have a project in that building and it definitely had the fastest connections on campus.

If any of you watching The Martian want to nerd out, scientists from both JPL and CalTech give interesting lectures on astronomy and space.

Some of the best ones I’ve been to were part of Astronomy on Tap at a pub in Pasadena.
