Citizens are not, by law, required to carry ID in general. UNtil recently, requirements that non-citizens carry ID were largely not enforced.

A drivers license is the most common ID - required to be carried while you drive. Access to planes and federal buildings requires one of a few types of ID.

which is why abolishing cops, the existing law enforcement structure, doesnt mean going without enforcement of laws. Instead we stop funding cops, and build community enforcement from the ground up, instead of pouring more cash into the failed system.

Historically, such efforts will be shut down before they succeed, because the Blue Wall forms. Chaff is thrown internally. Police strike. Start fearmongering. And suddenly the new way is out and old school leadership takes over.

reform of the system is opposed at all levels. You will not achieve reform with training seminars and more cash. You achieve reform by removing toxic elements, up and down the chain of command, that resist reform. Doing that involves clearing out lots of the leadership. 1/

And i do not believe the existing infrastructure for law enforcement will change on the basis of decades of history where law enforcement fights reform. Until you dismantle the blue wall, you aren't getting reforms past it. You can't build a new bridge until you clear away the collapsed one.

You‘ve highlighted reformist policies, that largely assume the police just need to be better trained, that they are, in their hearts, on the side of truth and justice and just need better guidance on how to do the right thing.

So yes, joe biden felt the police are on the side of truth and justice.

Id expect Roberts, who has repeatedly opined on the public undermining judges in the face of scandal after scandal and how that's the biggest threat to this country, to actively go out of his way to protect lower court judges if the integrity of lower court justices was something Roberts cared about

no immediate ruling - this language implies the judge ended the hearing without ruling from the bench, and the rest indicate the judge admonished the government to expect to lose.

I follow Christs teaching from the denunciation of the pharasees that it is not the words coming from a mans mouth but his actions that matter. As such, JPII's social teachings are far less meaningful than his willingness to protect pedophiles and put the reputation of the church ahead of his flock.

According to the reporting I see, Marriot, the conglomerate who owns this brand, supposedly charges the same fed rate locally across all their brands. It gets them a lot of business, and ensures government employees see Marriot brands favorably vis a vis legislation and regulation.

You don’t normally charge that case. It’s an international embarrassment and exposes vulnerabilities in your national security. Trump put the DOJ public blast and forced the indictment. up until trump made it public it was never going to be public. it would be biden or pence but silent. 1/

One of the worst parts of this is going to be so many 'if only DOJ moved faster' folks will only take the lesson that DOJ did not in fact need to do the work, and could have just arrested trump day one on nothing but vibes and that would somehow have magically been better.

Part of that is the only evidence of consciousness is the output of the AI. And either the output is a being that doesn't understand or control what it is saying and therefore is meaningless parrottry, or the lingual experts are right that its not concious communication at all.

No mechanistic model is so detailed as to be a perfect representation of the real world. A complete mechanistic understanding of a complex system is therefore impossible. The argument is we understand to a necessary level how LLMs work so as to rule out consciousness.

Generals mostly deal with 'adults', people with enough brain power to not do stupid shit like this. When they get an idiot, they just nod. Most of them wasted over 10 hours traveling, another hour isn't really a save and they can't go home faster

Re: Accounting for bribes - The first question is whether the business is cash basis or accrual basis. On the basis of not taking notes on your criminal conspiracy, not explicitly linking the bribe and the activity is important, so its a cash basis business, and income in 2024.

It may just be american humor, but humor has context. Of note are core forms of stress relief in dark times: Gallows Humor and reframing fear with levity. If this man was caught, it would be tragedy. But he was not, so we reframe our fear into comedy as a tool of defiance against the powerful.
