New work from @devisatarkar.bsky.social et al on how effects of climate variability- particularly more unusual events - depend on developmental stage & prevailing conditions in Wytham Woods great tits.

New preprint! 🪶

We analysed 60 years of data on 83,000+ great tits to show how extreme climate impacts on nestling growth and survival are stage-specific and context-dependent 🐣 🌍🔥❄️

a 14 day old great tit nestling, ringed for individual identification Figure from the paper showing that extreme climatic events interact with ambient climatic conditions and breeding timing within a season, in a developmental stage-specific manner, to influence nestling growth in great tits

I think they are rats, the tail is quite rattish, but I may be wrong. I remember the hole of the box being nibbled and enlarged. They were quite big. I am still amazed that they fitted inside and how reluctant they were to leave the nest.

I also found some pictures of not that common nest box dwellers

🚨 Master’s project!
Curious how birds find their way? 🧭🐦
Analyze decades of ringing data to study abnormal migratory routes and uncover what these deviations can reveal about the mechanisms guiding birds on their journeys. Drop me an email for details! #ornithology

🧪 New paper out! Growing up, wall lizards undergo a UV-visible “awkward phase” (who doesn’t?) that we can’t see—but they can. These ontogenetic color changes may mediate juvenile–adult interactions by delaying the onset of adult social signals. doi.org/10.1002/jez.... #colsci #lizard #ontogeny
Cryptic Ontogenetic Changes in the Ventral Coloration of a Color Polymorphic Wall Lizard (Podarcis muralis)
Wall lizards' ventral coloration undergoes cryptic ontogenetic color changes invisible without UV vision. We tracked wall lizards from hatching to one year of age. Spectrophotometry and visual modeli...

I found this mallard today. It seems like some kind of hybrid—if it is, is it possible to identify the species? Or is it just a chromatic aberration?
mallard with a strange colour variation, potentially a hybrid.

Las condiciones ambientales y la coloración de las aves
Una de las características más llamativas de las aves, además del vuelo, es su coloración. Las aves muestran una gran variabilidad tanto en el número como en la conspicuidad de los colores que tien…
